Shivendra Singh was born as ‘Shivendra Singh Choudhary’ ^[1]NDTV on Thursday, 9 June 1983 (age 40 years; as of 2023) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Gemini. Shivendra completed his schooling at the Shri Gandhi Shishu Mandir School, Gwalior.

Shivendra Singh’s mother, Radha Devi, is a homemaker, and his father is Jhamman Singh Choudhary. Shivendra has 2 brothers and one of them is Gajendra Chaudhary, who was also a hockey player and now works with the Central Railways.

Shivendra Singh and Nishi Singh dated each other for a long time before getting married on 10 December 2010. Nishi is also a former Indian hockey player. The couple is blessed with two daughters.

Career

Hockey Player

Shivendra Singh represented Mumbai in the 1998 Sub-junior national championships and then he was hired on a contract and represented the Tata Power hockey team, a team owned by Tatagorup. In 2002, Shivendra Singh joined Western Railways where his coach was Gurbux Singh who is an Indian field hockey player. During his time at Western Railways, he was also part of a few invitational tournaments, junior nationals, and junior district tournaments. Shivendra then became part of the Maratha Warriors in the first edition of the Premier Hockey League (PHL) which took place in Hyderabad and won the bronze medal, and in 2006, he participated and represented the Indian team in the second edition of the Premier Hockey League in Chandigarh. It was after his performance in the league that he got selected for the Indian national hockey squad. Shivendra also participated in the 2007 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, which was the seventh tournament of the Hockey Asia Cup for men. It was held in Chennai where India defeated Korea by winning the gold medal in the tournament finals. In 2010, he was selected in the Indian squad to play in the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, in which the Indian hockey team won the silver medal. In the same year, Shivendra Singh took part in the 2010 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in which India and Korea were the joint champions of the cup. In 2012, Shivendra was picked out and bought for $27500 by the team ‘Punjab Warriors’ for the Hockey Indian League (HIL). In the same year, he also participated in the 2012 Olympic Games which were held in London.

In 2019, he represented the Air India hockey team in the 82nd All India Scindia Gold Cup.

In 2023, Shivendra Singh was appointed as the assistant coach of the Indian Men’s hockey team for the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.

Facts/Trivia

• In 2003, Shivendra Singh was included in the training camp for the Poznan Junior Challenge Cup 2003 but was not shortlisted.

• He was awarded the ‘Best Player’ at the Bombay Gold Cup in 2003 and 2005.

• Shivendra was amongst one of those players who didn’t play in the age-group categories and made his entry directly into the senior national side.

• Shivendr Singh used to accompany his elder brother to the hockey stadium who used to go there for his practice and that’s how Shivendra started his hockey journey.

• He used to go for trials for the SAI (Sports Association of India) in Saifai, Uttar Pradesh and in 1998, he got selected for SAI, and in 1999, he joined Mumbai’s branch of the Sports Association of India.

• Shivendra Singh considers his elder brother and his wife Nishi his biggest inspiration in life.

• His favourite hockey players are Dhanraj Pillay and Jamie Dwyer.

• Shivendra was famous for his flying salute after scoring a goal. He used to salute the audience for coming to cheer the team. His salute was also for the people of India and for respect for the country.

• In 2010, Shivendra was banned for 2 matches by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) against the charges of “deliberately” hitting a Pakistani player Fareed Ahmed in the opening match of the 12th edition of the Men’s Hockey World Cup, which was held in New Delhi. Initially, he was banned for three matches which was later reduced to two as the other team members and staff of the Indian hockey team claimed the foul to be ‘unintentional.’ ^[4]Hindustan Times

• On 9 January 2024, Shivendra Singh was honoured with the ‘Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games 2023.’
