Career

Pravin Sawant faced difficulties in his childhood. He wanted to pursue a career in sports. He was inclined towards the archery, but the training centre was 45 kilometres away from his village. He was a ward boy in an orthopaedic hospital in Satara. He worked the night shift to collect money for his training, he used to do night shifts and leave for the training centre early in the morning which was an hour and a half away. At the age of 21, he quit his job as a ward boy and joined the police force as a police constable. He joined the police force under the sports quota. Mahindra Kadam, who ran a pharmacy close to the hospital, was a good friend of Pravin Sawant. He asked Pravin to train his daughter in archery. But Pravin had no sufficient space to give the training. Mahindra Kadam and his wife gave him their one-acre sugarcane field. He lacked the money to buy the sports equipment. Pravin’s mother and his wife sold their jewellery for Rs 2 lakh to support his dream. With all the support and hard work, he built an archery academy known as Drushti Academy in Satara’s Wadhe Phata area. He completed a course of NIS course for six weeks because it was mandatory for recognition as a coach. On 6 May 2022, Pravin Sawant participated in the Asia Archery Cup Sulaymaniyah 2022. In an interview, he told his life story,

I made my first bow using bent wires from an old umbrella,’ he says. ‘There was an archery academy 25 km away from my village, in Wai. But the bus cost 35 per return trip, money I didn’t have. It was heartbreaking, but what can you do? I was a player myself. I had dreamt of representing India. However, poverty and lack of resources ruined my dreams.” [2]The Hindustan Times
