Saweety’s younger sister, Siwi Boora, is a boxer, who competes in the lightweight category. Siwi was inspired to take boxing as a career by her sister Saweety. She has two brothers, Mandeep Boora and Naveen Boora; Naveen is a boxer.

Husband & Children

On 7 July 2022, Saweety got married to Deepak Niwas Hooda, a kabaddi player, who served as the captain of the India national kabaddi team from 2019 to 2022.

Reportedly, the couple met in 2015 in Rohtak, Haryana, where they were invited as chief guests to inaugurate the Haryana Marathon. Gradually, they developed romantic feelings for each other. After dating for more than a year, Deepak proposed to her for marriage and on 29 June 2022, the couple got engaged in Hisar, Haryana.

Career

Boxer

Before pursuing a career as a boxer, Saweety used to play kabaddi at the state level, representing Haryana’s women’s kabaddi team. In 2009, after her father advised her to train for boxing, her interest got inclined towards it. Initially, Saweety received training in boxing from her coach in the ploughed fields near the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University. After receiving adequate training, she started participating in various national boxing championships. Saweety bagged gold in the 4th Junior Women National Boxing Championship in 2009, which was held at the Monual Haq Stadium Rajendra Nagar in Patna. In 2010, she took part in the 1st Youth Women Haryana State Boxing Championship and won a silver medal. Her breakthrough came in the year 2014 when Saweety participated in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, which was held in Jeju City in South Korea; she won a silver medal in the light heavyweight (81 kg) category after losing in the finals from China’s Yang Xiaoli. In 2015, she participated in the Asian Women’s Amateur Boxing Championship in Wulanchabu, China in the light heavyweight (81 kg) category and won the silver medal after losing the final to China’s Yang Xiaoli. In 2018, Saweety decided to switch her weight class category from light heavyweight (81 kg) to middleweight (75 kg) for her further boxing tournaments. In 2019, she took part in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship and was defeated by Lauren Price of Welsh in the pre-quarter-final round.

In 2021, she won bronze at the ASBC Asian Boxing Championship, which was held in Dubai. In 2023, Saweety bagged a gold medal at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships after defeating China’s Wang Lina in the light heavyweight category (81 kg).

• In an interview, Saweety stated that she got sick right before preparing for her debut international boxing match and said,
  

  In 2014, I fell sick because of typhoid and had to get admitted. And at the time they announced that whoever becomes the National gold medalist, only they will go and represent at the world championship. My doctor advised me to rest but the love for the sport kept me going and I ran away from the hospital, took the train by running a sprint of 100m and fainted in the train. My parents told me to come back but I was determined to represent India and they blessed me and let me carry on.”

• In an interview, Saweety stated that one of her favourite web series is The Vampire Diaries on Netflix.

• In 2019, Saweety was invited as a chief guest by Navbharat Foundation for the Run For Security event at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurugram, Haryana.

• In 2020, in an interview, Saweety revealed that she was upset and underwent depression after she was not given an opportunity to participate in the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers. Consequently, for a year, she quit boxing and took up kabaddi as her career. However, when Saweety got to know that the trials for the Asian Boxing Championship 2021 had begun, her husband advised her to remain focused on boxing and encouraged her to participate in the trials.

• During her leisure time, Saweety likes to paint, write poems, and sing religious songs (bhajans) at home.

• In an interview, Saweety talked about how her father advised her to switch from playing kabaddi to boxing and revealed the reasons behind taking up boxing as a career and said,
  

  The reason I chose boxing was because I used to hardly talk in school but every time things went south, I couldn’t handle it. I used to explain to them the situation first and when they spoke back, I couldn’t reply and told myself to keep calm, and even after that, if they didn’t understand, I would just punch them then.”

• On 8 January 2023, Saweety, along with her husband Deepak Niwas Hooda, took part in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, initiated by the Indian politician Rahul Gandhi.

• In 2023, after Saweety held the title of “world champion” at the Women’s World Boxing Championship, she was awarded a cash prize of Rs 82.7 lakh ($100,000). She became India’s seventh boxer (male or female) to win a gold medal at the World Boxing Championship. ^[5]The Times of India Expressing her gratitude towards her supporters, Saweety said,
