Mariyam Shiuna

Mariyam Shiuna is a Maldivian politician and journalist. In January 2024, Mariyam’s derogatory remarks against PM Modi, after he posted a video of him on a beach in Lakshadweep, sparked a diplomatic row between India and Maldives. Following Shiuna’s remarks, the Maldives Government suspended her as a Cabinet Minister and two other ministers in the Mohamed Muizzu Government over their indecent remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India.

Journalist

Mariyam Shiuna started her career as a journalist at Huvadhoo in Male, Maldives. On 12 February 2016, Mariyam joined VTV as a presenter. She worked there till 30 September 2017. On 5 January 2020, Mariyam joined Dhivehi Channel as a senior producer, where she worked on news and current affairs. She also worked as a presenter for the channel before being promoted to the post of News Head on 16 September 2021. She worked there till 20 December 2021. She has also worked as a journalist at Bonthinews.com. From 18 July 2023 to 26 November 2023, she worked as a news anchor at Sangu TV.

Politician

Mariyam Shiuna was appointed as a Spokesperson/Media Executive at Male’ City Council on 23 December 2021 and held the post till 26 November 2023. On 27 November 2023, she was appointed as the Deputy Minister at the Maldives Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Art in the Mohamed Muizzu Government.

Mariyam worked as an administrative assistant at Alarms Pvt Ltd, a fire and security services company in Maldives. She also briefly worked at GMR Male’ International Airport Ltd. From 23 October 2017 to 23 December 2019, Mariyam Shiuna worked as a Procurement Officer at Maldive Gas Pvt. Ltd.

Derogatory Remarks Against PM Narendra Modi

In January 2024, Mariyam Shiuna made inappropriate remarks against the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Modi posted pictures and videos of him from his trip to Lakshadweep. Shinua used words like ‘clown’ and ‘puppet of Israel’ for Modi in her tweet, which she later deleted. [2]The Times of India

Her derogatory comments sparked huge outrage in India and ‘Boycott Maldives’ started trending on social media. Many Indian celebrities including Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Aakash Chopra requested Indian people to cancel trips to Maldives and instead opt for domestic destinations after which more than 8,000 hotel bookings and 2500 flight tickets from India to Maldives were cancelled. Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of the Maldives, described her remarks as ‘appalling.’ President Mohamed Muizzu’s government also distanced itself from Mariyam’s remarks, saying that the opinions are personal and do not represent the Government of Maldives. It said,

The government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and international partners.”

The government also assured of strict action against those who make such indecent remarks. Later, Mariyam Shinua, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid were suspended from their posts by the Maldives Government for their inappropriate remarks against PM Modi and India. Revealing the same, Ibrahim Khaleel, a minister at President’s Office in Maldives, during a media conversation, said,

All government officials responsible for the comments have been suspended from their post effective immediately.”
