Hugh Weibgen started playing cricket for the Valley’s team when he was under 8 years old. He worked his way up, playing for the younger and then the older teams until he reached the top team, the Men’s 1st Grade. Along the way, Hugh also played in Queensland’s cricket leagues and earned a beginner’s contract with the QLD Bulls team. On 22 January 2024, in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Weibgen scored 39 runs and was not out after facing 43 balls in the game against Namibia. On 31 January 2024, during the Super Six matches of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, Weibgen played well against England. He scored a hundred runs, which helped Australia start the Super Six round on a strong note. On 8 February 2024, the Australian team won a very close game against Pakistan in the semifinals of the Under-19 World Cup. They scored the 180 runs needed for the win in the very last part of the game, right after Pakistan had scored 179 runs. After winning the semi-final, in an interview, he said,

Never in doubt, had full faith in Vids and Raf to get the job done (laughs). Lot of emotions in the dressing room. Tough to leave out Anderson, but Tom Straker bowled unbelievably today. We felt like we were well prepared coming into this fixture. We fought so hard. Everytime we thought we were on top, we lost a wicket. 17-year-old Peake, such composure and maturity in the middle. India are a class team. We’ll love that challenge.”
