In 2015, he came across a few stand-up comedy videos of Sumit Anand and decided to try his hand at stand-up comedy. His debut open-mic was at Summer House Café in Hauz Khas, Delhi, which, to his utter disappointment, didn’t go so well; however, Gaurav didn’t lose hope and for the next three months, he prepared harder for his upcoming open mic at ‘Barrels’ in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. The show turned out to be a big hit, and Gaurav emerged as a rising name in the Indian comedy circuit. In 2017, Gaurav made his television debut with the show, The Great India Laughter Challenge. He was a finalist but didn’t win the title of the show.

In the same year, he came into limelight when his stand-up video ‘Being Baniya’ went viral. It was a recording of a show he had performed in New Delhi’s Akshara Theatre, which he shared with some corporate houses. An anonymous person among those corporate houses downloaded and shared the video on WhatsApp. Although he never permitted anyone to do so, he is grateful for the event as it turned out to be in his favour. In an interview, he said

I don’t know who among them downloaded the video and shared it on WhatsApp, but I’m grateful to that person. It made me popular and I started getting more shows.’

Belonging to the Baniya community, he excels at cracking jokes about the stereotypes of his community and has uploaded various videos like Baniya and his Punjabi Dost, Baniya Wedding Mein Punjabi Flavour, Baniya Harkat, Shaadi aur Gadda, etc. on his YouTube channel. Thereafter, Gaurav Gupta extensively toured across India for his solo stand-up special ‘Not Just Baniya.’
