Sooraj Thelakkad is an Indian actor, comedian, and mimicry artist, who is known for his work in the Malayalam film and television industry. He suffers from a physical condition called dwarfism.

Sooraj Thelakkad was born on Monday, 4 September 1995 (age 26 years; as of 2021) in Perintalmanna, Kerela. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He did his primary education at Government L.P. School, Thelakkad, following which he completed his schooling from G H S Vengoor. He graduated with B.Com from St.Mary’s College Puthananghadi. Inspired by his father, who enjoyed doing mimicry, Sooraj started doing mimicry for the first time in 5th grade when he was 10 years old. Later, he did M.Com. In 2011-12, he participated for the first time at the 52nd State School Children’s Festival held in Thrissur. He got the Kerala School State Kalolsavam mimicry A grade in 2012 and a second A grade in 2013.

Parents & Siblings

His father, Alikkal Mohanan, is a collection agent in Vanitha Co-operative Bank and his mother, Jyothilakshmi, is a housewife. He has a sister, Swathisree, who also suffers from dwarfism.

Reportedly, he has been in a relationship with a media person and he announced it through his Instagram page.

Career

Film

He started his career as an impressionist and mimicry artist. He made his debut with the Malayalam film Charlie directed by Martin Prakat in 2015. In 2017, he did cameos in Cappuccino, Udaharanam Sujatha, and Vimaanam. He rose to fame with the lead role of the robot in the film Android Kunjappan Version 5.25 (2019) directed by Ratheesh Poduval.

Initially, it was believed that the team of the film had used a real robot for the shoot. Sooraj hid the fact that he was the robot for at least 45 days. Post the reveal of Android Kunjappan’s real identity, social media flooded with posts appreciating Sooraj. Various celebrities like Guinness Pakru took to their Facebook handles to congratulate him. In an interview, Sooraj revealed that it took him one hour every day to dress up like Android Kunjappan and a special chair was kept on set for him to relax in the robot costume. He added,

During the shoot, I was exhausted as the robot’s attire was unbearably hot. Within four days, I suffered cough and cold due to sweating. My co-actor Suraj told me it would be better to shave off my hair. At first, I was not ready, but finally I decided to have the shaved look for Kunjappan,”

Sooraj also acted in movies such as Oru Adaar Love (2019), Ambili (2019), Dhamaka (2020) etc.

Television

His breakthrough in television came with Cinema Chirima, which was a comedy show that aired on Mazhavil Manorama. He started doing television in 2012 as a supporting artist on Bhima Jewels Comedy Festival Season 1, which aired on Mazhavil Manorama. He starred in the Comedy Super Nite franchise from 2015 to 2018. He did shows such as Comedy Nights with Suraj (2019), Funny Nights with Pearle Maaney (2020), and Comedy stars Season 2 (2014) as a comedian.

He entered the Bigg Boss (Malayalam season 4) as a contestant in 2022.

• Sooraj loves driving cars and always dreamt of owning a driving license; however, he found that his height was a barrier to getting a driving licence for a four-wheeler. In an interview, he said,
  

  It had been my dream to get a four-wheeler licence from the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD),”

  He added,

  I love driving cars. However, my height was a barrier. I searched for options and got a solution, The ‘solution’ was a car with a modified seat.”

  He received his licence from the Perinthalmanna regional transport office on 17 September. The Perinthalmanna Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) Binoy Varghese clarified that there was a provision to provide licences to people who are not tall and use ‘adapted vehicles’. In an interview, he disclosed that after receiving his driving license, he went on a road trip. He said,

  I went on a personal trip to Wayanad after getting the licence. It could not be avoided. I will plan more leisure trips after the Covid threat subsides,”

• In an interview, Sooraj said,
  

  When I was in high school, I was not even 90 cm tall. It is now 110 cm. Despite my physical limitations, I was given opportunities and noticed because of my short stature.”

• According to some media reports, the doctors stated that both Sooraj and his sister have stunted growth due to a genetic problem. Reportedly his father and mother were distant relatives. ^[3]Malayala Manorama In an interview, he said,
  

  My sister and I are like this. It is a problem of growth hormone. Father and mother are related. Theirs was not a romantic marriage, but an arranged marriage. One day my father called me and told me that you would not grow up anymore and would rise in life through art or some other ability. Friends are taller than us. My father says these things when he sees them all and understands all this”

• Sooraj got a house built according to his height. His previous house, which was owned by his father became dilapidated. The new house which is built specifically for Sooraj and his sister has shelves, cabinets, switches and chairs in accordance to their height for their convenience.
