Career
Philip Green has worked as a diplomat across four countries. He has been the Australian ambassador in Germany, Kenya (1998-2000), South Africa (2004 to 2008), and Singapore (2012 to 2016). In 2004, he led the Secretariat for the Review of Australian Intelligence Agencies. From 2009 to 2010, he served as the then Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd’s International Adviser. From 2010 to 2012, he was the Chief of Staff to Rudd, who was serving as the Foreign Minister. Philip also worked on Australia’s diplomatic ties with the United States of America when Donald Trump was in office (2017 to 2021). During this time, he was the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s head of the division. In 2016, he played an important role in strengthening Australia’s relations with Singapore through agreements like the Australia-Singapore Free Trade Agreement. From 2017 he oversaw the implementation of Australia’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. He also worked on agreements such as the Enhanced Strategic Partnership with Germany and the Australia-Germany Hydrogen Accord in 2021.
Australia’s Envoy to India
In June 2023, Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, announced that Philip Green was to be Australia’s next High Commissioner to India after Barry O’Farrell. He is Australia’s 22nd High Commissioner to India.
Awards, Honours, Achievements
- For his role in response to the Bali terrorist tragedy (also referred to as the 2002 Bali Bombings) in 2002, Philip Green was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM).
- In 2016, Philip Green was awarded an Honourary Doctor of the University from James Cook University in Australia.
