Shankar Jiwal was born on Saturday, 14 August 1965 (age 57 years; as of 2022) in Almora, Uttarakhand, India. His zodiac sign is Leo. He completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering in mechanical engineering at Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) (now – Delhi Technological University) in 1987. He cleared the UPSC examination in 1990 and was allotted the Tamil Nadu cadre of the Indian Police Services (IPS) on 15 September 1991. [2]IPS List He was posted as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Mannargudi in 1993, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Salem district in 1995, and Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to the then governor of Tamil Nadu in 1996. He became the SP of Madurai district in 1999, SP and Zonal Director of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chennai, in 2000, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and Commissioner of Police (CoP) of Trichy City in 2004.
He was posted as DIG of Intelligence-II, Chennai, in 2008, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Intelligence, Chennai, in 2011, and IGP of Special Task Force (STF), Erode, in 2011. He became the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of STF, Erode, in 2015 and DGP and CoP of Greater Chennai Police in 2021. He assumed the office of DGP, Tamil Nadu, on 1 July 2023. He has held other important positions, including the IGP of Internal Security, and established the Organized Crime Intelligence Unit in Tamil Nadu. He is credited with acquiring modern state-of-the-art surveillance tools for the Tamil Nadu police.
