Nayyara Noor (2022-1950) was a renowned Pakistani singer. She was popular for singing ghazals and poetries in mehfils and mushairas.

Nayyara Noor was born on Friday, 3 November 1950 (age 71 years; as of 2022) in Guwahati, Assam, India. She was brought up in Karachi, Pakistan. Her zodiac sign is Scorpio. She then attended the National College of Arts, Lahore. ^[1]Dawn While she was in college, she sang the bhajan “Jo Tum Todo Piya” from the film ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje’ (1955), which was originally sung by Lata Mangeshkar. There, a professor named Asrar of Islamia College listened to her song. He was a music expert and instantly liked Noor’s voice. He then asked her to make her career in singing. During an interview, while talking about the professor, Noor said,

He was a very fine singer himself and was steeped in classical music. I was lucky to have had the opportunity of singing some of his numbers in my early days.”

Noor’s father was a businessman and a member of The All-India Muslim League.

Husband & Children

While Noor was in college, she met a boy named Shehryar Zaidi. They both participated in various inter-college competitions in which Noor used to receive first prize and Zaidi used to come second. They then met at a gramophone record shop searching for Begum Akhar’s discs.

Soon, they fell in love with each other and got married. Sheharyar went on to act in various Pakistani TV dramas.

The couple has two sons, Naad-e-Ali and Jaffer Zaidi. Naad is a voice-over artist & singer, and Jaffer is a lead vocalist of the Kaavish music band.

Other Relatives

Naad is married to Mandana Zaidi a video creator, and Jaffer is married to the Pakistani actress Yamina Peerzada.

Career

Noor started her career with Radio Pakistan as a singer. She then worked as a singer for various Pakistani TV shows such as ‘Taal Matol’ and ‘Sach Gup.’ She went on to lend her voice to songs in various Pakistani films such as:

• “Tera Saaya Jahan Bhi Ho Sajana, Palkain Bichha Duun” from Gharana (1973)

• “Aaj Gham Hai Tau Kya, Woh Din Bhi Zaroor Aaeiga, Jab Tera Gham Khushi Mein Badal Jaaega” from Mastana (1973)

• “Iss Parcham Kay Saaey Talay Hum Eik Hain” from Farz Aur Mamta (1975)

• “Itna Bhi Na Chaho Mujhe” from Parda Na Uthao (1974)

• “Toot Gaya Sapna” from Bobby and Julie (1978)

Noor used to participate in various mehfils and mushairas to sing her Urdu poetries and ghazals. She gained immense popularity with her ghazals including “Woh Jo Hum Mein Tum Mein,” “Rang barsaat nay bharay kuchh tou,” “Phir sawan ruth ki pawan chali tum yaad aaei,” and “Kabhi Hum Bhi Khoobssorat Thay.” Noor lent her voice to the national song of Pakistan “Watan ki mitti gawah rehna.”

Death

On 20 August 2022, she died of cancer in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. ^[2]The Times of India Her funeral was performed at Jamia Masjid O Imambargah Yasrab, a mosque in Karachi, Pakistan. Many Pakistani celebrities shared their grief on her demise including Pakistani President Dr Arif Alvi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

• Before her birth, her family had shifted to Guwahati, Assam from Amritsar, Punjab, India.

• She grew up listening to the songs of various singers like Kanan Devi, Kamla, and Begum Akhtar.

• Before she immigrated to Pakistan, the Pakistani politician Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah used to visit Noor’s home in India as her father was an active member of The All-India Muslim League. The Pakistan Prime Minister tweeted,
  

  Irreparable damage to the music world. Be it a ghazal or a song, whatever Nayyara Noor sang, she sang it with perfection. The void created by Nayyara Noor’s death will never be filled.”

• In 1957, Noor, along with her mother & siblings, immigrated to Pakistan. Her father stayed back in India to look after their property, and in the 1990s, he also shifted to Pakistan.

• Noor announced her retirement from professional singing in 2012. She once said that music was her passion but not her priority.

• She loved listening to the songs of renowned singers like Noor Jehan, Farida Khanum, Kanan Bala, Begum Akhtar, and Lata Mangeshkar.
