Mehmood Junior

Mehmood Junior (1956-2023) was an Indian actor, singer, and Marathi film director. He is known for his roles in Hindi films like ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’ (1971), ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani’ (1988), ‘Journey Bombay to Goa: Laughter Unlimited’ (2007), and ‘Jaana Pehchana’ (2011). He passed away on 8 December 2023 after battling stomach cancer for some time.

Child Actor

Mahmood Junior made his Bollywood debut in 1967 with the Hindi drama film titled ‘Naunihal’ in which he played the role of ‘Biloo.’ In 1968, he starred in the Hindi romantic drama film titled ‘Suhaag Raat’ in which he played the role of ‘Banne.’ In 1970, he was cast in the Hindi drama film titled ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani’ in which he played the role of ‘Gopi.’

In 1986, Mahomood Jr. was cast in the Hindi film titled ‘Sasti Dulhan Mahenga Dulha’ in which he played the role of ‘Patel.’

In 2002, he starred in the Hindi comedy film titled ‘Chalo Ishq Ladaaye’ in which he played the role of a servant. Mehmood Junior also starred in many regional language films. A few Punjabi films that he was part of include ‘Maa Da Laadla’ (1973) in which he played the role of ‘Shotu,’ and in ‘Teri Meri Ik Jindri’ (1975) he played the role of ‘Latoo.’ Mehmood Jr. was also cast in the first colour film from Assam titled ‘Bhaiti,’ which was released in 1975.

Mehmood Junior directed and produced six Marathi films titled ‘Maskari’ (1991), ‘Pagalpan’ (1991), ‘Karmyog’ (1999), ‘Tulas Aali Ghara’ (2001), ‘Adla Badli’ (2008), and ‘Ardha Gangu Ardha Gondya’ (2011).

Television Actor

In 2012, Mehmood Junior made his television debut with the Hindi romantic drama television series titled ‘Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara,’ which aired on Star Plus. Mehmood Junior played the role of Shankar “Shanky” Chatterjee in the TV series. In 2016, Mehmood Jr. was cast in the Hindi drama TV series titled ‘Ek Rishta Saajhedari Ka’ in which he played the role of ‘Mansoor’ (Diwakar’s childhood friend and driver). The series was aired on Sony TV. In 2017, Mehmood Jr. was cast in the Hindi historical comedy-drama TV series titled ‘Tenali Rama’ in which he played the role of ‘Mullah Nasruddin.’ The series was aired on Sony SAB.

Death

Facts/Trivia

  • Mehmood Junior joined the film industry at the tender age of 9 and in his school, he used to enact and imitate different actors. He would also deliver special performances in his school functions.
  • His older brother used to do still photography on film sets, which made him curious to see the shooting environment. Hence, he used to accompany his brother to the sets occasionally.
  • One day, when he accompanied his brother on the sets of a Hindi film titled ‘Kitna Nazuk Hai Dil,’ Mehmood Jr. saw a child artist struggling to speak a one-liner dialogue. Mehmood Jr. was standing behind the director’s chair and said

    Itni si line nahi bol sakta, aagaya acting karne.” (He can’t even say these few lines and he wants to be an actor)

    Hearing Mehmood Jr’s words, the director of the film asked him if he could speak those lines. He recited the lines of the scene. Impressed by Mehmood’s performance, the director cast him in the film. However, the film was never released. [4]Rediff. com

  • While he was shooting for the Hindi film titled ‘Suhaag Raat’ (1968), the entire cast of the film was invited to Mehmood’s (deceased) daughter’s birthday party except for Mehmood Jr. He felt bad about it and said to Mehmood,

    Mera baap koi producer, director nahi isliye main aap ki beti ke birthday main nahi aa sakta kya?”

    He further added that if he came to the party, he would dance to Mehmood’s song titled ‘Hum kale hai toh kya hua dilwale hain.’ Listening to this, Mehmood invited Mehmood Jr. to the party, where Mehmood Jr. gave a dance performance on Mehmood’s song and everyone loved it. After the party, Mehmood told Mehmood Jr.’s father to bring him to Ranjit studios and after they went there, Mehmood Ali made him his shishya (disciple) by tying a ganda (a sacred thread) on his arm, and gave him the name ‘Mehmood Junior.’ Mehmood Jr. also tied the thread on Mehmood Ali’s arm and gave him five rupees and 25 paise as Dakshina (offering).   • In November 2023, Mehmood Junior was diagnosed with stage four cancer in the Liver, lungs, and intestines. His best friend and Indian actor Johnny Lever made a visit to Mehmood Junior to lift his spirits.
