Controversy

In April 2020, Hannen, Mawada Eladhm, and three other men were arrested by the Egypt Police for encouraging young woman to upload their indecent videos on video sharing apps in exchange for money. They were accused of violating the moral values of Egyptian families and an imprisonment of 2 years was announced to Hannen and Mawada Eladhm. On 12 January 2021, their imprisonment was cancelled, but within a week, the court sustained the appeal and overturned imprisonment on the charges of human trafficking.

On 20 June 2021, a court in Cairo announced imprisonment of 10 years to her along with a fine of 200,000 pounds, and the other Tiktoker named Mawada involved in the matter was sentenced to jail for 6 years. She was arrested by the Egyptian Police on 22 June 2021. A few hours before her arrest, Hannen in one of her Instagram videos asked the President of Egypt Abdul Fattah al-Sisi to forgive her. She said,

10 years! I didn’t do anything immoral to deserve all this. I was jailed for 10 months and didn’t say a word after I was released… Why do you want to jail me again?”

While talking to the reporters, Hannen’s lawyer, Hani Samesh said,

She had received a longer sentence because she had not appeared in court, even though it was her legal right not to show up. We will demand the restoration of the case proceedings because there are contradictions between the verdict and the merits on which the court’s decision is based. We hope that she can get a reduced jail sentence or an acquittal.”

On the whole matter, Human rights activists said,

The two women have been prosecuted as part of a crackdown by Egyptian authorities targeting female social media influencers on charges that violate their rights to privacy, freedom of expression, non-discrimination and bodily autonomy.” [3]BBC
