Booked for shooting Mahesh Gaikwad inside a police station

On 2 February 2024, a case was registered against Ganpat Gaikwad for shooting and injuring politician Mahesh Gaikwad inside a police station because of an ongoing land dispute. The case was registered under the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as the owner of the land claimed that Gaikwad abused and insulted her and her family members and also passed casteist comments.

Gaikwad fired six bullets into Kalyan Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad and also injured his associate Rahul Patil inside the cabin of the Hill Line police station’s senior inspector.

After the incident, the general secretary of Maharashtra BJP said that strict action would be taken against Ganpat Gaikwad; however, in an interview after the incident, Gaikwad claimed that he did this to protect his son, and he did not regret his actions at all. He said,

My son was manhandled inside the police station. They forcibly took possession of my land. Eknath Shinde is trying to create a rule for criminals in Maharashtra. If he remains the Chief Minister Maharashtra will only see the emergence of criminals. It is Shinde who has made a criminal out of me today. I was frustrated and that is the reason I opened fire. I do not have any regrets. If my son is beaten up inside the police station what do you expect me to do. I was not planning to kill them but if someone behaves this way right in front of police then I have to act in self defense.” [1]The Indian Express
