NEET 2023
On 7th May 2023, he took the NEET-UG entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). On 13th June 2023, the results were announced, and he got the first position in NEET-UG 2023 with a score of 720 out of 720. He achieved a percentile of 99.999901. He shared the top rank with Prabanjan J from Tamil Nadu, who also scored 720 marks in the examinations.

As per a senior official from NTA, if two candidates have the same marks, their ranks are determined by a tie-breaker rule, i.e., the candidate with higher marks in biology is given a higher rank than the others. If the biology marks are also the same, the rule is applied for chemistry and then for physics. If the scores remain the same, the older candidate gets the higher rank. Varun, after passing the exams, mentioned in an interview that he plans to study MBBS at the All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) in New Delhi. He said,
Our common village is Totada in the Srikakulam district. Both of my father and mother are teachers. I am happy to be a topper at the national level. Studied MBBS at Delhi AIIMS.”
In June 2023, he secured second position in the Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) in the agriculture stream by scoring a total of 151 marks in the exams.
