She hails from Bona village near BSF Academy in Tekanpur in Dabra Tehsil of the Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh. She studied till 8th standard at a Government school in Kurauti, Jalaun. Anju became friends with Nasrullah, a native of the Kulsho village in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, on the social networking website Facebook in 2020. Nasrullah’s father’s name is Gulimula Khan, and he is the youngest of five brothers. He is a science graduate from Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Sheringal. They later became very close friends. In July 2023, after crossing over to Pakistan, Anju said that she has a very deep affection for Nasrullah who is six years younger than her.

She applied for Visa to travel to Pakistan in May 2023 which was approved on 4 May 2023, and she was permitted to travel within 90 days and was allowed to stay for 30 days.

On 20 July 2023 July 2023, she left her home and travelled from Alwar to Delhi, then took a bus from Delhi to Attari–Wagah border, and then crossed over to Pakistan and went to Lahore on 22 July 2023. Nasrullah received her in Rawalpindi. In an interview, her brother David said that Anju had initially told her family that she was going to Jaipur to meet her sister; however, she instead went to Amritsar and informed her family about the same after reaching there. She then went to Lahore and informed her family that she would return after a few days. Before going to Pakistan, she also went on a leisure trip to Goa where her sister lives. Stay in Pakistan
When the news of her travel to Pakistan emerged, people started speculating that she had travelled to marry her friend, Nasrullah; however, she denied the news and said that she is only there to meet him and view the beauty of Pakistan. Nasrullah also said that there was no love angle to their connection, and she was living there safely in a separate female room at his house. On 25 July 2023, a few media reports became viral which claimed that she has accepted Islam and changed her name to Fatima. Reports also claimed that she has gotten married to Nasrullah in a nikah ceremony and took gold worth Rs 22 lakhs. [5]The Times of India

On the contrary, a few media reports emerged on the evening of 25 July 2023 which claimed that she has not converted to Islam, and the news regarding her conversion and marriage were totally fake. [6]Amar Ujala Anju also released a video in which she said that she was happy in Pakistan and requested Indian media and people to not harass her children and family.
When this news reached her family, her father said that Anju should not return and rather die in Pakistan. He also claimed that he had no relation with Anju for 20 years. A video was shown on social media in which Anju and Nasrullah were seen visiting the Lawari Tunnel which connects the Dir Upper district with the Chitral district.

On 28 July 2023, a video emerged in which she was seen eating dinner with Nasrullah and his friends while wearing a burqa. Nasrullah talked to an Indian reporter on 28 July 2023 and said that he was married to Anju and would not leave her.

He also claimed that Anju was living separately from her husband for three years and had also submitted a petition to divorce him before coming to Pakistan. Nasrullah said that Anju would return to Pakistan and then bring her children along with her to Pakistan. Nasrullah said that if Anju did not return to Pakistan, he would come to India to bring her back. These claims were denied by her husband who said that he was still married to Anju.
