Akhil Mishra

Akhil Mishra (1956-2023) was an Indian actor and director, who primarily worked in the Hindi film and TV industry. He is well-known for playing the role of Librarian Dubey in the popular 2009 Bollywood film ‘3 Idiots.’ In 2023, he died of an accident in his kitchen at the age of 67.

Wife & Children

In 1983, he got married to Manju Mishra, his co-actress in the feature film ‘Dhat Tere…K’ (1983). Manju Mishra died in 1997. On 3 February 2009, he got married to Suzanne Bernert, a German actress who primarily works in Indian films and TV industry. On 30 September 2011, he again got married to Suzanne in a traditional Indian manner. Akhil Mishra did not have any children.

Before acting in films and TV shows, he had appeared in many stage plays and theatrical productions. He started working in theatre in March 1975.


In 1983, he made his acting debut as Pitamber in the comedy film ‘Dhat Tere… Ki.’

In 2009, he hit the spotlight after he played the cameo role of Librarian Dubey in the coming-of-age comedy film ‘3 Idiots’ starring Aamir Khan.

He appeared as Napoleon in the 2014 Indian English-language historical film ‘Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain,’ based on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. In 2019, he acted with his wife Suzanne Bernert in a short film titled ‘Majnu ki Juliet,’ which was also written and directed by Akhil Mishra. He has worked in many Hindi films including ‘Gandhi, My Father’ (2007), ‘Well Done Abba’ (2010), and ‘Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai’ (2012).


In 1985, he made his TV debut with DD National’s Hindi TV series ‘Rajani.’

He appeared as Fantush, an Ad film director, in DD National’s popular Hindi sitcom ‘Shrimaan Shrimati’ (1994-1999). From 2009 to 2013, he played the role of Umed Singh Bundela in Colors TV’s popular Hindi TV series ‘Uttaran.’ Some other Hindi TV shows in which he appeared include Star Plus’ ‘Hatim’ (2004), Life OK’s ‘The Adventures of Hatim’ (2013), and Colors TV’s ‘Udaan’ (2014).


On 21 September 2023, he died at the age of 67 after falling in his Kitchen at home in Mumbai. Reportedly, Akhil was facing health problems related to high blood pressure for a while. On the day of the accident, he was working in the kitchen when he apparently fell and injured his head. Later, he was discovered bleeding while lying on the floor and was immediately taken to the hospital. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, he could not be saved and passed away a few hours later.   • According to his wife Suzanne Bernert, Akhil Mishra took a break from his acting career to help her learn Hindi and perform better in Hindi films.
  • To learn acting, he joined an acting school in Mumbai; however, he lost interest in studying acting and dropped out of the acting school. Later, he began to actively participate in theatrical productions. After gaining popularity in the theatre industry, the acting school which he dropped out of, hired Akhil as an acting teacher.
  • In an interview, he said that rather than having a favourite actor, he had favourite performances of actors and mostly liked performances of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
