Yalamanchili Satyanarayana Chowdary aka Srujana Chowdary or Sujana Chowdary was born on 2 June 1961 (age 62 years; as of 2023) in Kanchikacheria village, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. He is currently living in Lodhi Estate, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. In 1984, Mr. Y. S. Chowdary completed his graduation in mechanical engineering from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT), Hyderabad. He then pursued his masters in machine tool engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in 1986.

Mr. Y. S. Chowdary was named after his grandfather, a retired IPS officer. His father, Y Janardhana Rao, was a Superintendent Engineer in Andhra Pradesh Government who was employed with the AP Irrigation and Power Department.

On 6 August 1989, Mr. Y. S. Chowdary got married to Y. Padmaja Chowdary and is blessed with two children. His son’s name is Y. S. Karthik, and his daughter’s name Y. Naga Chandini.

Career

Politics

Mr. Y. S. Chowdary’s political career started in 2010, after being elected to the Rajya Sabha, on the behalf of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from Andhra Pradesh. Since then, he has been a part of many Parliamentary committees and was even appointed as the Minister of State for Science & Technology, & Earth Sciences in 2014. Due to his popularity and social welfare work, his political career took off and became the most crucial fundraiser for the TDP. Before joining Rajya Sabha, he was a member Indo-Singapore Parliamentary Friendship Group, Parliamentary Standing Committee and a Parliamentary Forum, besides being a member of the Committee for Hyderabad Telecom District, Task Force on Clean Energy formed by Columbia Law School of USA, Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology Management Committee and Court of the University of Hyderabad. In 2016, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for a second term. He is currently designated as MP of Rajya Sabha for Andhra Pradesh from the Bharatiya Janta Party.

Social initiatives

Mr. Y. S. Chowdary has adopted two villages namely, Ponnavaram, and Palaparru, under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna (SAGY) programme. Ponnavaram village is 60 km from Vijaywada, Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. As part of the programme, he has taken various initiatives to transform the region into a model village. In the past couple of years, he has installed digital classrooms in the local government schools and has also developed the village’s medical and infrastructural facilities by building toilets, cemented roads and more.

Charitable trust

Mr. Y. S. Chowdary established Sujana Charitable Trust in 2007 with a vision to support two schools in Chennai that were especially run for the challenged children. Through this trust, he also supported old age homes in Hyderabad. He also offers scholarships and merit awards for excellence to students in the domains of sports, social entrepreneurship, academics, engineering, agriculture, rural development, and poverty alleviation.
