Srabani Nanda was born on Tuesday, 7 May 1991 (age 31 years; as of 2022) in Phulbani, Kandhamal, Odisha. Her zodiac sign is Taurus. She attended Shree Satya Sai High School and Government Girls High School, Phulbani. She completed her graduation from Ramadevi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar. She did a Master’s in Business Administration at North Odisha University (now Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanjadeo University). She was interested in athletics from a young age and started training with her father’s support. In 2012, she was appointed as a junior clerk at the East Indian Railway Company, and on 23 May 2016, she was appointed as a Junior Manager (Group -B) in the Odisha Hydro Power Corporation. ^[1]The Telegraph

Career

Srabani Nanda runs in 100m sprint, 200m sprint, and 4 x 100m relay races. She joined the Government Sports Hostel in Bhubaneswar in 2002 and trained under Nila Madhab Deo and Tarun Shaw of the Sports Authority of India (SAI). She trained at the Mittal Champions Trust in South Africa and Australia in 2009 and 2011 respectively. She started participating in athletic competitions in 2007 and won medals in several national and international competitions. She completed the 200m race in 23.07 seconds at the XXVI International Meeting G.Kosanov Memorial in Almaty, Kazakhstan and qualified in the 200 m sprint for Rio Olympics 2016. She finished sixth in the heat level of the 2016 Olympics. She trained in Kingston, Jamaica with MVP Track & Field Club under coach Stephen Francis from 2018 to 2021. She participated in various local competitions in Jamaica and National Games held in Gujarat in 2022. She competed in the 4 x 100m relay in the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham and finished in fifth place.

Controversy

Srabani Nanda gave angry statements towards the conducting officials after the final of the 200m sprint event during the 61st National Inter-State Athletics Championships held in Chennai in June 2022. She finished fourth in the event and alleged that the event’s management was amateurish and poorly coordinated. She said that one day before the 200m final, the race start time was changed to 6:40 pm from the scheduled time of 5:10 pm. When she reached the call room, the race start time was changed again to 6:10 pm. Due to this sudden change in timings, she lost the time to warm up before the race. Also, in the call room, her lane was changed to 6 from 4; however, when she reached the track, it was again changed to 4. She said that each lane requires a different strategy, and such frequent changes frustrated her. Also, the announcers did not address Srabani’s name as an Olympian, and they instead announced Hima Das‘ name as an Olympian, who never even qualified for the Olympics. Srabani addressed these issues while speaking to the reporters and said,

I am one of two or three female athletes to have qualified for the Olympics in an individual event. After all the hard work, when this happens minutes before the race, it affects you mentally.”

A technical official of the event dismissed her claims and said,

It was nothing, just a sticker change. How does that matter? We put the right sticker later.” ^[2]Sportstar
