Career

Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was elected as the coordinator of the Youth Congress when he was twenty years old. In 1992, he contested the Punjab assembly elections from the Amloh constituency and won the election. The then Chief Minister of Punjab Beant Singh designated Dharamsot as the Deputy Minister (youth welfare). In 2002, he contested the Punjab assembly elections from the Amloh constituency for the second time and won. The then Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh appointed him as the parliamentary secretary (public works department, home and youth welfare). In the 2012 Punjab assembly elections, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot contested from the Nabha assembly constituency and won the elections by defeating SAD’s candidate Balwant Singh by 22,548 votes. In 2017, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot won the Punjab Legislative Assembly election from the Nabha constituency on the ticket of the Indian National Congress. Soon after he won the election, he was designated as the Minister of Forests and Social Welfare. Sadhu Singh Dharamsot served as the MLA in the Punjab Legislative Assembly for five terms. However, in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, he was defeated by an Aam Aadmi Party candidate, Gurdev Singh Mann, with a margin of 51,554 votes from the Nabha Constituency.

Controversy

On 7 June 2022, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot attracted controversy when he was booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B (conspiracy) of the IPC by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on corruption charges under a scam in the forest department. He was involved in this conspiracy when he was a cabinet minister in the ministry of Captain Amarinder Singh and was the head of the forest department. A few days before his arrest, Guramanpreet Singh (the district forest officer) and Harminder Singh Hummy (a contractor) were also detained by the police for their involvement in the scam. Sadhu Singh was charged for the illegal felling of over 25,000 trees. In 2020, he was charged with the Post Matric Scholarship scam by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau for permitting illegal scholarship money to private colleges and universities in Punjab. During the Post Matric Scholarship scam, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was serving as the Social Security Minister on the ticket of the Indian National Congress.
