Controversy

Return Britain’s £2.3 Billion

In August 2023, India’s remarkable accomplishment with ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission garnered praise from all over the world. Likewise, UK news presenter Patrick Christys commended India’s successful lunar mission; however, certain comments made by him during the news broadcast sparked controversy. During his show on GB News, after congratulating India, he proposed the idea that India should consider repaying the 2.3 billion pounds of aid given by Britain between 2016 and 2021. He also added that Britain should not provide monetary help to countries having their own space programme. He said,

I would like to congratulate India on landing on the dark side of the moon, I would also like now to invite India to return the 2.3 billion pounds (Rs 24,000 crore in Indian currency) foreign aid money that we sent them between 2016-2021. We are also set to give them 57 million pounds next year. We should not be giving money to countries with a space programme. As a rule, if you can afford to fire a rocket at the dark side of the moon, you shouldn’t coming to us with your hand out.” [3]The Free Press Journal

After his video went viral on social media, he was immensely trolled by Indians. [4]Hindustan Times After facing backlash on social media, he shared the video of him commenting on Chandrayaan-3 from GB News channel on X and wrote,

I appear to have enraged Indian Twitter.”
