Career

Oviya started her acting career by portraying supporting roles in the films. She made her acting debut with the 2007 Malayalam film “Kangaroo” as ‘Susanna.’

She then worked in films like Puthiya Mukham (2009) and “Apoorva (2008)”. She made her Tamil debut with the film “Naalai Namadhe” as ‘Aishwarya’ in 2009. She was pursuing her graduation when the director Sargunam offered her the lead role of ‘Maheshwari’ in the Tamil film “Kalavani” in 2010.

She became a household name after the film. She then signed for several small budget films such as “Amara,” “Vengai,” “Mugham Ni Agham Naan,” and “Muthukku Muthagga” but only a few had a theatrical release. She made her Kannada film debut with the 2011 film “Kirataka” in the role of ‘Nethra.’

She started prioritising her work in the Tamil Cinema. Her acting career began to decline after 2014. In 2015, she made her Bollywood debut with the film “Yeh Ishq Sarfira” in which, she played the role of ‘Riya.’

In 2017, she participated in the reality TV show “Bigg Boss Tamil.” Oviya gained instant popularity through the show, but she later quit the show on medical grounds.

After the show, her acting career took a turn, and she was signed for several films including “Muni 4: Kanchana 3,” “Oviyavai Vitta Yaru,” “Kalavani 2,” “Raja Bheema,” and “Black Coffee.”

Controversies

In 2017, Oviya made headlines after she reportedly tried to commit suicide by drowning herself in the swimming pool on the reality show Bigg Boss Tamil (Season 1). According to the reports, the actress took this extreme step after her fellow contestant in the show, Aarav, turned down her love proposal and mocked at it. This left her extremely upset and led her to commit suicide.
