Om Raut

Om Raut is an Indian film director, scriptwriter, and producer. He is best known for directing the famous 2020 film Tanhaji for which he received the Best Popular Film award at the 68th National Film Awards. He is the director of the 2015 film Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush, which earned him many awards and accolades. In 2022, Om Raut attracted controversy when the teaser of his film Hindu mythological film Adipurush was released in the media. The film was an adaption of the Hindu epic Ramayana and was accused of manipulating the original characters. In the film, Indian actor Prabhas portrayed Lord Rama.

Om Raut was born on Tuesday, 21 December 1981  (age 42 years; as of 2023) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. he completed his school education at Balmohan Vidyamandir, Mumbai, India. Soon after completing his school education, Om Raut joined Shah and Anchor College of Engineering in Mumbai to earn a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering. Later, he earned a postgraduate degree at Syracuse University in New York. In 2021, Om Raut was pursuing a PhD degree in the business of cinema.

Career

Child Artist

Om Raut began working in the Bollywood film industry as a child artist. In childhood, he appeared in many theatre plays and ad films. He made his film debut in 1993 with the film Karamati Coat in which he appeared as a child artist, Raghu who was in a lead role. Reportedly, Om Raut’s mother, Neena Raut introduced him to the world of entertainment and cinema in his childhood.

He then joined MTV Network in New York City as a writer and director soon after completing his college studies. Thereafter, he came back to India and joined DAR Motion Pictures and began working as its Creative Head. Later, he worked at Valuable Group (the promoters of UFO-Moviez) as its vice president of creative business.

Producer

He then began working as a film producer and produced the film City of Gold in 2010. In 2011, he produced the film Haunted – 3D. In 2012, Om Raut, along with his mother, Neena Raut, co-founded a film production house named Neena Raut Entertainment.

Om Raut marked his directorial debut with the Marathi film Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush in 2015. The film was produced under Neena Raut Entertainment’s production company. The film Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush earned Om Raut the Best Debut Director award, and the film was picturised on the life of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, an acclaimed Indian social reformer and freedom fighter.

In 2020, he directed the Hindi film Tanhaji, which was his Hindi directorial debut film. This film was honoured with several national awards and accolades after its release.

In October 2022, a promotional video of his film Adipurush (an adaption of the Hindu epic Ramayana) was released, and it was announced that the film would release on 16 June 2023. The cast of the film includes Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan portraying Rama and Ravana, respectively.

Controversy

In 2022, Om Raut attracted controversy when a case was registered against him in the Delhi High Court over the look of actor Saif Ali Khan in the film Adipurush in which Saif portrayed Ravana. [1]The Times of India In October 2022, his mythological drama film ‘Adipurush’ was blamed for hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindus. It was claimed that the Hindu deities were misrepresented in an “unwarranted” and “inaccurate” way in the promotional video of the film. Soon after the allegations, Om Raut mentioned in a media conference that all the blames against him were baseless, and the makers of the film represented the looks of the Ravana in relation to today’s time. Om Raut said,

Our Ravan in today’s time is demonic, he is cruel. The one who has abducted our Goddess Sita is cruel. We have shown what Raavan looks like in today’s time. This is not a film or a project for us but a mission. Our film is a symbol of our devotion, and we need everyone’s blessings for this.”

Om Raut added in the same discussion that the film was just a translation from books to celluloid. Om cited,

I don’t want anyone to misunderstand that we have changed it. It is to translate from books to celluloid. So this is not a film for us. This is a representation of our bhakti, shraddha (devotion and faith) and what we stand for.”

Awards, Honours, Achievements

In 2015, Om Raut was honoured with the Best Director for Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush at 52nd Maharashtra State Awards. In 2016, he received the Best Debut Director for the film Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush at Filmfare Awards. In 2021, Om Raut was the recipient of the Best Director award for the film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior at the 66th Filmfare Awards. In 2022, Om Raut was felicitated with the Best Popular Film for the film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior at the 68th National Film Awards.
