Nitin Agrawal is an Indian Police Service Officer of the 1989 batch of the Kerala cadre. He took charge as the Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) on 14 June 2023.

Nitin Agrawal was born on Wednesday, 27 July 1966 (age 57 years; as of 2023) in Delhi. His zodiac sign is Leo. He attended the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, to pursue a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from 1983 to 1987. He then pursued an M.Tech from IIT, Delhi (1987-1989). He has also obtained an M.Phil. in Social Science from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Career

Indian Railways

Nitin Agrawal started his career as an Assistant Engineer in 1989 with the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE). He worked there for around a year.

Civil Services

As an IPS officer, Nitin Agrawal has occupied several prestigious roles which include serving as Deputy Inspector General in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Inspector General in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Inspector General in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). In 2014, during his tenure at ITBP, he attained the rank of ADG. He also worked as an Inspector General (IG) Training at ITBP, where he was in charge of overseeing the training of officers and other personnel in the force, including basic, advanced, and in-service courses. Additionally, he was also responsible for handling legal and organizational restructuring affairs.

In July 2015, he assumed the charge of Additional Director General of Kerala Police. As the ADG, he was in charge of police communication and wireless systems, responsible for collecting, maintaining, collating, analyzing, and presenting crime and related data. He also supervised the Finger Print Bureau and served as the nodal officer for several state-level responsibilities. He was appointed as the Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) on 11 June 2023 after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the Ministry of Home Affairs’ proposal to appoint him as the force’s new Director General. The appointment letter read,

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the appointment of Shri Nitin Agarwal, IPS, presently working as Additional DG, CRPF as Director General, Border Security Force (BSF) with pay at Level-16 of the Pay Matrix from the date of joining the post and up to 31.07.2026 i.e. date of his superannuation or till further orders whichever is earlier.”

Agrawal assumed the office of DG of BSF on 14 June 2023, succeeding Sujoy Lal Thaosen, who had taken over the additional charge from Pankaj Kumar Singh upon his retirement in December 2022. Sujoy Lal Thaosen has held this position for the last five months.

Prior to his appointment as Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), Agrawal had a distinguished tenure of approximately five years as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

He also held key positions such as Additional Director General (ADG) Operations and Additional Director General (ADG) Central Zone within the CRPF.

Salary

As per Level 16 of the Pay Matrix under the 7th Pay Commission, Nitin Agrawal would be entitled to a salary between the pay range of Rs 2,05,400 and Rs 2,24,400. He would also be entitled to various perks and allowances including an official vehicle or Transport Allowance at a rate of Rs 15,750 plus DA per month, and a Government Bungalow with the necessary security.
