Career

Television

Mehar Bano made her acting debut with ARY Television Network’s drama serial ‘Daagh’ in 2012. Mehar played the character of Umama in the drama series and received huge popularity for it. She also earned a nomination at the Lux Style Awards for Best Television Actress after delivering such a brilliant performance. Soon after becoming a household name in Pakistan with her debut serial, Mehar disappeared from the entertainment industry for more than 4 years. According to Mehar, she followed her fathers’ advice to focus on her education at that early stage of life and focus on her acting career later. In an interview, she said,

I entered the industry with a television show when I was simultaneously completing my A levels. The show went on to be nominated for the Oscars and my father didn’t want me to fall prey to vanity and was very particular about me getting educated before I pursue a full-fledged career in the entertainment industry. I took a break immediately and didn’t get to enjoy fame, I ideally should have. I got everyone to delete my accounts and the content about me on the internet. I went to college and returned to the industry. It wasn’t a struggle for me because I never took it to my head at all.”

While completing her higher education, Mehar Bano became part of a sitcom called ‘Miss Fire,’ aired on Geo Entertainment in 2013. In 2014, She also appeared in a short drama series ‘Uff Yeh Mohabbat’ directed by Amin Ali.

Film

Mehar Bano made her acting debut in a film with Adnan Sarwar written and directed biographical adventure drama film ‘Motorcycle Girl,’ released on 20 April 2018. The film is based on the life of motorcyclist Zenith Irfan and Mehar played the character of Zenith’s best friend in the film.

In 2020, Mehar Bano made her debut to the world of web series with ZEE5 exclusive Pakistani drama web series ‘Churails.’ The series features Sarwat Gilani, Mehar Bano, Nimra Bucha, and Yasra Rizvi in the lead roles portraying four young, independent, and empowered women who group together as detectives whose mission it is to expose the city’s unfaithful, elite husbands. Mehar Bano played the character of Zubaida, a young boxer seeking independence and love. Mehar Bano and all other cast and crew members began facing criticism soon after the treasure of the web series went on air in Pakistan. According to a section of society, ‘Churails’ presented women in a way that is not accepted by Pakistani society and culture. Social media accounts of the leading ladies of the Churails faced huge backlash resulting in which the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banned the streaming of the web series in Pakistan. Finding no other solution, Mo Azmi, Shailja Kejriwal, and Asim Abbasi, the producers of the web series, decided to partner with ZEE5, an Indian streaming platform, and release it worldwide. ‘Churails’ started streaming online from 11th August 2020 and received huge appreciation for it but still a fraction of the audience didn’t approve the content and made it controversial. Responding to the criticism faced after the streaming of ‘Churails’ on Zee5, Mehar Bano said,

I believe streaming platforms have given the liberty to portray women and their concerns in a different light. The advent of streaming platforms has allowed women to express themselves better and to be represented better on a global platform, as opposed to what we are conventionally used to seeing on South Asian television. Television hasn’t done justice in portraying reality as is, restricting them to be onedimensional characters, more like how the men in South Asia want them to be seen. They are seen as subservient, subjugated lot. They’re either extremely generous and cruelly evil. It has been very detrimental to how women are viewed in this part of society. Streaming platforms like ZEE5 have come up with content where the portrayal of women has been progressive and has got to mirror their real problems. For an actor, it’s a dream come true; women are being portrayed just the way they have always wanted it to be.”
