Hayley Kristen Matthews ^[1]Wisden – Hayley Matthews aka Hayley Matthews was born on Thursday, 19 March 1998 (age 25 years; as of 2023) in Bridgetown, Barbados. Her zodiac sign is Pisces. She was interested in cricket since her childhood and often went to the ground to see the matches which her father played. She went to the Pickwick Club’s ground Kensington Oval with her brother, and they ran around the ground and inside it during the breaks. She attended the People’s Cathedral Primary School near her house and started playing for the school boy’s team around the age of 8. She became the captain of the team by the age of 11. After completing her primary schooling, she cleared the Common Entrance examination and enrolled at Harrison College, which is one of Barbados’ most prestigious secondary schools. She then joined the school boy’s under-13 team, helped them to win a tournament, and captained the team in her final year as an under-13 player.

She started playing for the Barbados under-19 cricket team when she was 9 years old and was selected for the senior Barbados team at the age of 12 in 2010. She had played for the Pickwick Club in Men’s first division by the age of 18.

She made her ODI debut on 11 November 2014 against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney and made his first ODI half-century with a score of 55 runs. On 22 September 2018, she scored her first ODI century when she made 117 runs against South Africa in Bridgetown. On 6 June 2019, she took 4 wickets for 57 runs against England at Leicester. On 12 July 2021, she scored 100 runs not out against Pakistan. On 11 November 2021, she took 4 wickets for 26 runs against Pakistan in Karachi. During the match against New Zealand on 4 March 2022 in the 2022 Women’s World Cup held in New Zealand, she scored 119 runs off 128 balls, which is her highest ODI score. In the 2017 Women’s World Cup held in England, she scored 158 runs in 7 matches at an average of 22.57 and took 3 wickets. In February 2023, during a match against India in the Women’s World Cup 2023, she suffered a shoulder injury.

• She became the youngest West Indian player (male or female) to score a century at home when she scored 117 runs against South Africa in an ODI match in Bridgetown on 22 September 2018.

• In 2022, Hayley Matthews hit the highest-ever individual score of 132 for West Indies in a women’s T20I. She broke Deandra Dottin‘s record of 112 against South Africa.

Athletics

She competes in Javelin Throw and has participated in various tournaments for Barbados. She won a silver medal in the under-17 category in the 2013 CARIFTA Games (Caribbean Free Trade Association). She won a silver medal in the under-18 category in the 2014 CARIFTA Games. She won a bronze medal in the under-18 category in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in Athletics held in Mexico. She won a gold medal in the under-18 category in the 2015 CARIFTA Games.

Controversy

Banned for 8 matches

In October 2019, she was banned for eight matches by Cricket West Indies (CWI) Disciplinary Committee following an incident which happened after a training session in August 2019 and involved a fellow Barbadian player. • She likes to play games on PlayStation. Her favourite games are Fortnite and Fifa.

• She said in an interview that young female players should play in the boy’s tournaments. She credited her playing with boy’s teams for improvement in fielding and facing fast bowling.
