She has played in the Women’s Big Bash League, Women’s T20 Cricket Super League, The Hunderd, and Women’s Premier League. She is regarded as one of the best all-rounders in women’s cricket.

Hayley Kristen Matthews [1]Wisden – Hayley Matthews aka Hayley Matthews was born on Thursday, 19 March 1998 (age 25 years; as of 2023) in Bridgetown, Barbados. Her zodiac sign is Pisces. She was interested in cricket since her childhood and often went to the ground to see the matches which her father played. She went to the Pickwick Club’s ground Kensington Oval with her brother, and they ran around the ground and inside it during the breaks. She attended the People’s Cathedral Primary School near her house and started playing for the school boy’s team around the age of 8. She became the captain of the team by the age of 11. After completing her primary schooling, she cleared the Common Entrance examination and enrolled at Harrison College, which is one of Barbados’ most prestigious secondary schools. She then joined the school boy’s under-13 team, helped them to win a tournament, and captained the team in her final year as an under-13 player.

Her father’s name is Mike Matthews, and her mother’s name is Lisa Matthews. Her father played cricket as a batsman, who played in fourth position and bowled off-break as well for Pickwick Cricket Club, one of Barbados’s best cricket clubs. She has a brother named Wayne Matthews.

She started playing for the Barbados under-19 cricket team when she was 9 years old and was selected for the senior Barbados team at the age of 12 in 2010. She had played for the Pickwick Club in Men’s first division by the age of 18.

International

ODI

She made her ODI debut on 11 November 2014 against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney and made his first ODI half-century with a score of 55 runs. On 22 September 2018, she scored her first ODI century when she made 117 runs against South Africa in Bridgetown. On 6 June 2019, she took 4 wickets for 57 runs against England at Leicester. On 12 July 2021, she scored 100 runs not out against Pakistan. On 11 November 2021, she took 4 wickets for 26 runs against Pakistan in Karachi. During the match against New Zealand on 4 March 2022 in the 2022 Women’s World Cup held in New Zealand, she scored 119 runs off 128 balls, which is her highest ODI score. In the 2017 Women’s World Cup held in England, she scored 158 runs in 7 matches at an average of 22.57 and took 3 wickets. She played her debut T20I match on 27 September 2014 against New Zealand at Kingston and scored 14 runs. She played in the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup held in India, and she scored 66 runs off 45 balls in the final against Australia at Eden Garden, Kolkata, her first T20I half-century, helping them to win the 2016 T20 World Cup. She was chosen as Man of the Match for her good performance. On 14 March 2018, she scored 53 runs off 31 balls against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. On 6 October 2018, she made 70 runs off 52 balls against South Africa at Tarouba. On 29 May 2019, she scored her maiden T20I century with a score of 107 runs off 62 balls against Ireland in Dublin. On 6 October 2022, she made 56 runs off 54 balls against New Zealand at North Sound. In the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup held in India, she scored 153 runs in 6 matches at an average of 25.5 and took 3 wickets. In the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup held in West Indies, she scored 82 runs in 5 matches at an average of 16.4 and took 4 wickets. Indian Leagues

She played for the Velocity team in the Women’s T20 Challenge Tournament in 2019. She played for the Trailblazers team in the Women’s T20 Challenge Tournament in 2022. In the 2023 auction for the Women’s T20 Premier League, she was acquired by Mumbai Indians for the base price of Rs40 lakhs.

West Indian League

She played for the Barbados Royals team in the Women’s T20 Caribbean Premier League and Women’s T10 The 6ixty tournament in 2022.

In the 2017 Women’s World Cup, she suffered a knee injury in a match against England in Bristol. In December 2018, she suffered a knee injury in the right leg during a match for Hobart Hurricanes against Melbourne Stars in WBBL. In February 2023, during a match against India in the Women’s World Cup 2023, she suffered a shoulder injury.

  • She became the youngest West Indian player (male or female) to score a century at home when she scored 117 runs against South Africa in an ODI match in Bridgetown on 22 September 2018.
  • In 2022, Hayley Matthews hit the highest-ever individual score of 132 for West Indies in a women’s T20I. She broke Deandra Dottin‘s record of 112 against South Africa.

Athletics

She competes in Javelin Throw and has participated in various tournaments for Barbados. She won a silver medal in the under-17 category in the 2013 CARIFTA Games (Caribbean Free Trade Association). She won a silver medal in the under-18 category in the 2014 CARIFTA Games. She won a bronze medal in the under-18 category in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in Athletics held in Mexico. She won a gold medal in the under-18 category in the 2015 CARIFTA Games.

Controversy

Banned for 8 matches

In October 2019, she was banned for eight matches by Cricket West Indies (CWI) Disciplinary Committee following an incident which happened after a training session in August 2019 and involved a fellow Barbadian player.
