Dibang is an Indian journalist and news anchor who is known for his debate shows and powerful reporting. He is a former host of the prime show ‘Jan Man’ and the weekly show ‘Press Conference’ of the Hindi-language news channel ABP News. Dibang is considered to be rated among the best news anchors (Hindi) in the industry in India.

Dibang was born in 1971 (age 52 years; as of 2023) in Arunachal Pradesh, India. He grew up in Lohit, Arunachal Pradesh. Dibang graduated from the University of Delhi.

Career

Journalism 

Dibang started his journey in the field of journalism with The Illustrated Weekly of India, an English-language weekly news magazine in India. Later, he joined ‘The Times of India’ in New Delhi as a Correspondent for its weekly edition ‘The Sunday Times.’ He got the opportunity to appear on television as an anchor when Surendra Pratap Singh (deceased), also known as S. P. Singh, an Indian journalist, asked him to join ‘Aaj Tak,’ a Hindi-language news channel. [1]The Times of India Dibang accepted the offer and worked for the channel. After stepping down from Aaj Tak, he joined ‘NDTV,’ an Indian news media company, and became the Executive Editor of the channel, and soon, he was appointed as the Managing Director of the news channel. While working for NDTV, he anchored the first-ever-hour-long Hindi debate show ‘Muqabla’ on the NDTV India channel; the show won the Best Talk Show Award at the Indian Television Academy Awards in 2006, becoming the first Hindi talk show to win an award in a category consisting of mostly English-language shows. In 2007, Dibang resigned as Managing Director of NDTV but continued hosting the debate show ‘Muqabla.’ Later, he switched to another television news channel, ‘ABP News.’

Film Appearances

Dibang appeared in some Bollywood films as well. In 2013, he made his debut in the Bollywood film industry with the political action thriller film ‘Madras Cafe,’ starring John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri. Dibang played the role of a former intelligence officer in the film.

In 2010, he played the role of a journalist in a Bengali film, Gangor, directed by Italo Spinelli, an Italian filmmaker; the film was based on a Bangla short story, Choli Ke Peeche, by Indian writer Mahasweta Devi. In 2016, Dibang appeared as ‘JCP Amod Mehra’ in the film ‘Pink,’ which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, and Kirti Kulhari, along with others.

  • He is inclined towards literature, music, and world cinema. Some of his favourite film directors are Pedro Almodovar (Spanish), Majid Majidi (Iranian), and Wong Kar-wai, a Hong Kong film director.

  • Dibang, in an interview, talked about how he decided to make the transition to the big screen with the film ‘Madras Cafe’ (2013). Dibang said that he knew the film’s director Shoojit Sircar since he joined NDTV and was familiar with his work, which included films like ‘Yahaan’ (2005) and ‘Vicky Donor’ (2012), in the Bollywood film industry because of which he felt comfortable working on the big screen.
