Dhee is an Indian playback singer who is best known for her Tamil songs Naan Nee (2014), Rowdy Baby (2018), and Enjoy Enjaami (2021).

Dhee was born as Dheekshitha Venkadeshan [1]GQ on Friday 26 June 1998 in Sydney, Australia. Her zodiac sign is Cancer From 2010 to 2016, she studied at the Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School, Australia. Born into a musical family, the Chennai-based singer was inclined towards music since childhood. Her mother, grandmother, and even her great grandmother was a renowned musician. Surprisingly, Dhee never pursued professional training in music. In fact, she learned Carnatic music from her mother and grandmother. In an interview, while talking about the onset of her musical journey, she said,

My mum and grandma taught Carnatic music but I never sat and learnt with them properly like I should’ve and they’ve never pushed me to either. I’ve listened in on the lessons but I’ve never been professionally trained.”

Dhee grew up listening to a diverse set of artists playing in her house 24/7, which sparked her interest in music. At the age of six, she bought her first album after she came across the songs of the popular American girl group Destiny’s Child. In an interview, she said,

When I was about six or so, I remember listening to Destiny’s Child in my cousin’s car and it blew my mind. I went and bought myself a copy of their album. It was the first album I bought myself.”

Intrigued to pursue a full-time career as a singer, she quit school in 2016 and ventured into the entertainment industry.

Dhee was born in a Sri Lankan Tamil family. [2]Indulge  Her mother, Meenakshi Iyer, is a well-versed Carnatic singer and musician. Her father’s name is Venkadeshan, and her brother’s name is Sudheekshanan. Later, her mother got married to the Indian film composer Santhosh Narayanan who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry.

Career

At the tender age of fourteen, she began her career as a playback singer with the song “Disco Woman” from the Tamil-language horror film Pizza II: Villa (2013). Immensely appreciated, the song was composed by her step-father, Santhosh Narayanan.

Her crowd-puller song “Naan Nee” from the film ‘Madras’ (2014) earned her the nominations for Best Female Playback Singer at the Vijay Awards (2014) and Filmfare Awards South (2015).

She was critically acclaimed for her work in the sports drama film ‘Irudhi Suttru’ (2016), in which she lent her voice for the songs “Ey Sandakaara” and “Usuru Narumbeley.” Dhee was nominated for the SIIMA Award in the category of Best Female Playback Singer for her work in the film ‘Irudhi Suttru.’

After quitting school in 2016, she worked as a playback singer in various Tamil films like Kabali (2016), Meyaadha Maan (2017), and Vada Chennai (2018). She also worked as a playback singer in the Telugu-language sports drama film ‘Guru’ (201 7) for the songs “Oo Sakkanoda” and “Gundelothulalo.” Until 2018, all of her songs were produced by her step-father and the Indian film composer, Santhosh Narayanan. She rose to prominence with the song “Rowdy Baby” from the Tamil-language film ‘Maari 2’ (2018) in which she sang alongside Dhanush. Produced by Yuvan Shankar Raja, the massively popular song became one of the highest viewed Tamil music videos, crossing a billion views on YouTube.

For the song “Idharkuthaan” from the Tamil-language film ‘Bigil’ (2019), Dhee collaborated with the renowned Indian film composer A. R. Rahman. She made her debut as a pop singer with the 2021 independent Tamil song “Enjoy Enjaami,” which crossed over 100 million views in less than a month on YouTube. The chartbuster song was produced by maajja, an initiative led by the Oscar-winning music composer A. R. Rahman and the popular English rapper-singer M.I.A., with an aim to represent the rising South Asian musical talent to a global audience. While talking about her hit song in an interview, she said,

Enjoy Enjaami talks about a time where we, as humans weren’t divided and we were one with nature and the song is calling out to that time — calling us to be together.”

  • “Enjoy Enjaami” was the debut song released under the A. R. Rahman-helmed label, maajja.
  • In an interview, she attributed her unique style of dressing to her mother. She said,

    I look up to my mum when it comes to fashion and style. Ever since I can remember, she’s carried herself in her own way and has never been someone who followed trends. She’s a supremely confident woman and she dresses for nobody except herself.”
