Arun Goel is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS Officer) in the 1985 batch of the Punjab cadre. On 19 November 2022, he was appointed as the Election Commissioner of India.

Arun Goel was born on Friday, 7 December 1962 (age 60 years; as of 2022) in Punjab, India. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He passed B.A. (Maths) and M.Sc. (Maths) from Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, as a gold medalist. Thereafter, he obtained a PG Diploma in Development Economics from Churchill College, University of Cambridge, England. In-Service Training

In 1989, Arun Goel started his in-service training as a development admin at the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, and trained there till 1990. From 1992 to 1993, he did his in-service training in Junior Level Programme at Administrative Training Institute, Mysore. In 1999, he started middle-level in-service training at Batches in the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. A year later, he did in-service training at Disaster Management in the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. On 18 November 2022, he voluntarily took retirement as the Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries. He was replaced by Kamran Rizvi. His retirement was supposed to be held on 31 December 2022. On 19 November 2022, the President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed him as the Election Commissioner of India. As per the statement of the Union Law and Justice Ministry,

The President is pleased to appoint Shri Arun Goel, IAS (Retd.) (PB: 1985) as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the date he assumes the office.”

 

Since 15 May 2022, the position of one Election Commissioner in the three-member committee was vacant.
