Anand Mahindra was born on Sunday, 1 May 1955 (age 68 years; as of 2023) in Bombay (now Mumbai), Bombay State (now Maharashtra and Gujarat), India. His zodiac sign is Taurus. Since childhood, he wanted to be a filmmaker.

Being from an industrial background, his parents never forced him to carry their business forward. He completed his bachelor’s from Harvard University (Cambridge, US) in filmmaking. In 1977, he returned to India and in 1981, he joined Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd (MUSCO) as the Executive Assistant to the Finance Director. Expanding his business globally, he became a household name after becoming the chairman of the Mahindra & Mahindra group in 2016. His professional journey started in 1981 when he joined Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd (MUSCO). In 1989, he got promoted to President and Deputy Managing Director of the MUSCO. This step opened the door to Mahindra Group’s diversification into the new business level that bought real estate development and hospitality management into consideration.

In 1996, he established a Nanhi Kali charitable trust that supports the education of the young needy girls in India. Until 2017, it has contributed to the education of around 1,30,000 girls. He also became one of the boards of the director of the Naandi Foundation which is a trust that works toward the socio-economic development of India.

Soon, he became the president of ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) that works on the research and development of environmentally safe mobility. He then co-founded the Harvard Business School Association in India that promotes Domain management in the country.

Soon, he established the Naandi Danone, which provides safe drinking water to rural parts of India. In August 2012, he took over the position of the Chairman of the board and Managing Director of the Mahindra group from his uncle Keshub Mahindra.

Besides this, he also became the promoter of Kotak Mahindra. He is been endowed with several recognitions and achievements.

Controversy

Case Over Airbag Failure

On 23 September 2023, an FIR was registered against Anand Mahindra in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on a complaint from Rajesh Mishra, a resident of Kanpur. According to the complainant, he gifted a Mahindra Scorpio SUV to his son Apoorv on 2 December 2020. On 14 January 2022, his son had an accident in the same car while returning to Kanpur from Lucknow, and he died on the spot. In the complaint, Rajesh alleged that Apoorv and his friends were wearing seat belts during the accident, but the airbags failed to deploy. He also claimed that the car was not equipped with airbags. Following the complaint, the Raipurwa Police registered an FIR against Anand Mahindra and 12 others in the case under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 287 (Negligent conduct with respect to machinery), 304-A (causing death by negligence), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 102-B (criminal intimidation). ^[2]The New Indian Express
