Amit Agrawal

He has held several key positions both at the Centre and in the states of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. On 20 June 2023, he assumed charge as the chief executive officer of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Career

Amit Agrawal embarked on his professional journey as an Assistant Collector in the General Administration Department on June 22, 1994. Holding this position until January 1, 1996, he was subsequently promoted to the role of Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) within the General Administration Department in Gwalior. After a tenure of approximately six months, Amit was relocated to Jhabua, where he served for approximately one year. From June 23, 1997, until September 25, 2000, Amit assumed the crucial role of Chief Executive Officer within the Panchayat & Rural Development Department, specifically at the District Panchayat in Dhar. Following this, on September 28, 2000, he assumed the position of Mission Director at the Rural Development Department in Bhopal. During his tenure, he spearheaded the Watershed Mission, working diligently to achieve its objectives. Subsequently, Amit held positions as the Deputy Secretary in both the General Administration Department and the Information Technology Department in Raipur. He worked in these roles before being appointed as the District Collector in the General Administration Department in Mahasamund on July 1, 2001. Amit served in this capacity until June 27, 2002. Following his tenure as District Collector, Amit took on the role of Joint Secretary in the Technical Education & Manpower Planning Department in Raipur, where he worked for around eight months. Afterwards, he held various high-ranking positions within the government of Chhattisgarh. These included serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Information Technology Department and the Bio-Technology Department in Raipur, as well as holding the role of Joint Secretary in both departments. Additionally, he served as Joint Secretary in the Finance Department and later took on the responsibilities of Managing Director and OSD in the same department. On July 8, 2004, he embarked on a central deputation and assumed the role of Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) located in Delhi. He dedicated approximately three years to this position before being appointed as the Director of the PMO. During his time in Delhi, he also served as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, from January 6, 2012, to November 27, 2012. On September 6, 2013, he was appointed as the Secretary of the Technical Education Department in Raipur. Later, he served as the Commissioner of the Commercial Taxes Department in Raipur and also held the position of Secretary in both the Finance and Commercial Taxes Departments in Raipur.

On December 26, 2016, Amit Agrawal embarked on his second central deputation, this time as the Joint Secretary of Finance in New Delhi. He dedicated approximately four years to this position. Following that, from November 3, 2020, to May 22, 2022, he served as the Additional Secretary of Finance. Subsequently, Agrawal assumed the role of Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) from May 23, 2022, to June 11, 2023.

Agrawal is widely recognized as an expert in the field of IT and e-governance. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in innovation initiatives and was actively involved in the development of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill. The Bill is expected to undergo deliberation in Parliament in 2023. On June 20, 2023, he was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as part of a significant bureaucratic reshuffle by the Narendra Modi government. He succeeded Saurabh Garg as the CEO of UIDAI. According to a Personnel Ministry order, Agrawal assumed the rank and pay of the Additional Secretary to the Government of India. In addition to his role at UIDAI, he holds the position of Chairman of the National Digital Communications Policy Committee. He also serves as the non-executive Chairperson of National Informatics Centre Services Incorporated, and as a director on the Boards of the National Institute of Smart Government and the Data Security Council of India.
