Raghav Mathur was born on Thursday, 2 April 1981 (age 42 years; as of 2024) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His zodiac sign is Aries. He shifted with his parents to Calgary and then Fort McMurray, Alberta, where he attended Sir Winston Churchill High School.

While growing up in Calgary, he developed an interest in hockey and singing; however, he decided to concentrate on singing due to not being good enough in the sport. He was working with the prominent vocal coach Seth Riggs in Los Angeles by 17. He flew to England a year later and settled in Liverpool, where he joined the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. During this time, he joined a band called ’11/7,’ which was nominated for the MOBO Awards.

Parents & Siblings

His father Krishna Sahai Mathur, pursued a Master’s degree in Engineering from Germany. His mother’s name is Nina Mathur, and his parents got married on 22 January 1969. His parents were from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and later migrated to Germany and thereafter, Canada. His father passed away in 2022.

Career

Albums

Storyteller- The Debut Album

He launched his debut album, ‘Storyteller,’ in 2004. He produced 4 singles on that album, and his song ‘Angel Eyes’ reached number 7 on the UK chart. The track was inspired by ‘Murder She Wrote’ by Chaka Demus & Pliers and featured Jucxi and Frankey Maxx. He also collaborated with Kardinal Offishall, for the song ‘sooner or later’ in the album. The album sold 1.6 million copies worldwide and made him a global superstar with his fanbase stretching to India, Africa, and parts of Europe. Raghav also went on a worldwide tour in 2005 and performed in several venues such as Karachi, New York City, Africa, Australia, and Canada.

Identity

Raghav signed a contract with ‘Universal Music India’ in 2009 and released his second album, ‘Identity.’ The album was released in India exclusively and rose to number 3 on the charts. The song ‘Quincy Jones’ from the album was dedicated to ‘Quincy Jones,’ an American producer. The album also featured the American hip-hop artist ‘Redman’ in the song ‘My Kinda Girl.’

The Phoenix

In 2010, Raghav released his third album ‘The Phoenix’ after signing a record deal with an Independent Canadian record label, ‘Cordova Bay.’ The album featured ‘Kardinal Offishall’ in the song ‘So Much,’ produced by Labrinth. The song received nominations from ‘The Canadian Juno Awards,’ for the “R&B/Soul Recording of the Year award, in 2011. Another song from the album ‘Fire’ became Raghav’s most successful single in North America; it rose to number 38 on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100.

Singles

Raghav made his breakthrough debut with the single ‘So Confused,’ released in 2004. The song became a hit and rose to number 6 on the UK Singles Chart. His next released singles ‘Can’t Get Enough’ and ‘It Can’t Be Right’ with 2Play, both featured in the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. He released ‘Let’s Work It Out’ under his name, and it got featured on the UK Singles Chart at no 15.

Collaborations 

He worked with A. R. Rahman and Shilpa Rao on the song ‘Ishq Shava’ from the film Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012). He collaborated with A. R. Rahman again, this time for the song ‘Mawalli Qawalli’ from the film ‘Lekar Hum Deewana Dil’ (2014).

His song ‘Until the Sun Comes Up,’ released in 2015, featured the Indian film actor Abhishek Bachchan and the American artist Nelly.

He collaborated with Jio Saavn in 2018 and released the song Maayera. The song has been played globally on more than 10 million streams and remained in the top 15 of the streaming charts in India for 15 weeks continuously.

  • Raghav’s father once had a paralysis attack and suffered from Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
  • Raghav’s parents enjoyed listening to Hindi and Indian classical music and one day, Raghav sang one such song in front of them when he was just 4, and it surprised them.
  • While living in Calgary, Raghav was part of the club Youth Singers of Calgary.
  •  Raghav once said in an interview with DESIblitz that he feels more accepted in the British Asian music community, despite being a Canadian.
