Lovlina Borgohain

Lovlina Borgohain is an Indian amateur boxer. She is the first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics. Lovlina is the second boxer from Assam to represent India in boxing after Shiva Thapa.

Lovlina Borgohain was born on Thursday, 2 October 1997 (age 25 years; as of 2022) in the Golaghat district of Assam. Her zodiac sign is Libra. She did her schooling at Golaghat’s Barpathar Girls High School. In her teens, she got inspired by her elder sisters and started Kickboxing. However, she later switched to boxing. Once Lovlina participated in the trials held at her school by the Sports Authority of India and came to the notice of the boxing coach Padum Boro. Boro selected her for boxing and began her training in 2012. Later, she was coached by Chief Women’s Coach Shiv Singh. Although her father was not financially very sound, he struggled very hard to support Lovlina to pursue boxing.

Family

Lovlina’s father, Tiken, is a small-scale businessman. Her mother’s name is Mamoni Borgohain. She has two elder twin sisters named Licha and Lima. They both were kickboxing players and competed at the national level. However, they did not pursue the game beyond the national level.

Career

Lovlina started her boxing career while she was in her teens. In 2017, she won a bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in Vietnam. Next, she won a bronze at the President’s Cup held in Astana in June 2017. In February 2018, she won a gold medal in the welterweight category in India Open – an international boxing championship. The medal made her place in the Common Wealth Games in 2018.

In the same year, she won a silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia and a bronze medal at the 13th International Silesian Championship in Poland.

Lovlina represented India at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, held in New Delhi for the first time in November 2018, and managed to win a bronze medal in the Welterweight (69 kg) category.

In 2019, she got selected for the Women’s World Boxing Championships (2019) in Ulan-Ude, Russia, and won a bronze medal in it.

The following year she won a bronze medal in the 2020 Asia and Oceania Boxing Olympic qualifiers and made her place in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. She was defeated by the Turkish boxer Busenaz Surmeneli on 4 August 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics and finished with a bronze medal.

On 26 March 2023, she clinched her first-ever World Championship gold medal after she defeated Australian boxer Caitlin Parker by 5-2 in the 75 kg category at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships (2023), held in New Delhi, India.

  • During an interview, while talking about Lovlina’s height, her father said,

    Since she has always been very tall, her friends in school used to make fun of her but it’s her height that has helped her become the boxer she is today, and hopefully, she will win a medal in Australia.”

  • Although Lovlina is physically very fit, she realised that physical fitness was not just enough and turned to meditation. Talking about it in an interview, Lovlina said,

    I had prepared very well, be it technique or fitness, going into that event. And when I lost, it was mentally draining for me. Only after that did I realize that physical prowess was not all that mattered. Playing a big tournament brings with it a lot of stress and I became aware of the psychological aspects of the sport. I took to meditation to improve my psyche and it also helped me strategize in between bouts. I started performing better after that.”

  • After Lovlina won the ticket to the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the chief minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to congratulate her. He tweeted,
