Politics

In 1970, K. V. Thomas joined the Indian National Congress (INC). He is a member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (Kerala PCC). From 1978 to 1987, he held the position of General Secretary of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee. From 1987 to 2001, he served as the president of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee. Since 1984, he is a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). From 1992 to 1997, he was the Treasurer of Kerala PCC. In 2022, Thomas was expelled from the Kerala PCC for attending a seminar organised by CPM Party in Kannur despite INC’s disapproval. However, his membership in AICC remained intact.

In 1984, K. V. Thomas, on a ticket from the INC, contested from the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency. He won the elections defeating A. A. Kochunny (a candidate of the Indian Congress (Socialist) party) by 70,324 votes. Thereafter, he was appointed as an AICC observer for Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Lakshadweep. He was also a member of the Committee on Official Language and Library Committee. From 1984 to 1989, he served as a member of the Committee on Subordinate Legislation. From 1984 to 1996, he was a member of the Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Tourism, and Ministry of Defence.

1989 General Elections

In 1989, K. V. Thomas, on a ticket from the INC, contested from the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency. He won the elections defeating independent candidate P. Subramnoian Poti by 36,465 votes. From 19 January 1990 to 7 August 1990, he was a member of the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament. In 1990, he became a member of the Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

In 1991, K. V. Thomas, on a ticket from the INC, contested from the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency. He won the elections defeating V. Viswanatha Menon, a candidate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), by 47,144 votes.

2009 General Elections

In 2009, K. V. Thomas, on a ticket from the INC, contested from the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency. He won the elections defeating the CPI(M) candidate Sindhu Joy by 11,790 votes. Between 27 May 2009 and 18 January 2011, he served as a Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. In January 2011, he assumed the position of Union Minister of State (independent charge) in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Controversies

Surya TV forgery case

In 2002, a letter was faxed to Chief Minister A. K. Antony’s office stating that K. V. Thomas, who was then serving as Tourism and Fisheries Minister in Antony’s government, was involved in the 336 crore Hawala transaction. The following day, the State Government declared that it was a forged document. The letter was flashed was on the channel Surya TV by a reporter named Anil Nambiar, who later surrendered to the police after a month in hibernation. In his testimony, Anil Nambiar confessed that it was Congress MLA Sobhana George who had given him the document. Thereafter, a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued for the arrest of Sobhana George. It was later held that Sobhana was a victim of groupism among the Congress Party. In the end, the court ruled out this case as a purely fabricated case against Sobhana. [5]The New Indian Express

Corruption Charges

In 2003, a PIL was filed against K. V. Thomas in the High Court of Kerala by a member of the rival faction for various allegations including that Thomas had undervalued his property at Kallancherry in near Kumbalangi island, the toll at the bridge at Thoppumpady in Kochi was collected by an unnamed company of Thomas, and that he had bought three sophisticated fishing boats in the name of his wife. Disciplinary Action by Congress

In April 2022, AICC cracked the whip against Thomas and issued him a show-cause notice for going against the party line. Thomas faced expulsion threats from INC for attending a seminar organised by CPM Party in Kannur despite INC’s disapproval.   • Thomas had represented the Ernakulam LS constituency five times and the assembly constituency twice when he was denied a party ticket to contest the seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In 2022, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan alleged that leaders belonging to minority communities, including K V Thomas, were being neglected and sidelined in the Congress party.
