He started playing cricket during his childhood and trained under R66T Academy High Performance Director, Shaun Seigert. In 2016, he moved to Adelaide, Australia where he trained at Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy.

Domestic

Gus Atkinson played for Surrey Under-13 in 2011, Surrey Under-14 in 2012, Surrey Under-15 in 2013, and Surrey Under-17 in 2015 in age-group tournaments. He also played school cricket for Bradfield College from 2013 to 2016, Bradfield College Under-17 in 2015, and Bradfield Waifs in the 2017-18 Cricketer Cup.

He played for Spencer Cricket Club in the Surrey Premier League in 2014 and 2016. In 2016, he started playing for Surrey Second XI and Surrey All Stars and represented Hampshire and Surrey Second XI in 2018 in domestic competitions. He suffered three successive stress fractures in his back in 2017, 2018, and 2019 which impacted his career. When he fully recovered from injuries, he started making a name for himself in the domestic circuit.

On 8 August 2020, he made his first-class debut for Surrey against Essex in the 2020 Bob Willis Trophy. He made his Twenty20 debut on 28 August 2020 for Surrey against Sussex in the 2020 T20 Blast Tournament.

He made his List A debut on 22 July 2021 for Surrey against Yorkshire in the 2021 Royal London One-Day Cup. Atkinson was a member of the Surrey team that won the 2022 County Championship.

International

Test

He was anticipated to make his debut during the 5-test series against India in 2024. He gained attention for warning Indian batsmen by saying that he would bowl short balls and sharp spells to dismiss them.

ODI

He made his ODI debut on 8 September 2023 against New Zealand at Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground, Cardiff, Wales and went wicketless after conceding 47 runs in 7 overs.

ODI World Cup

In the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, he played 3 matches and took 4 wickets at an average of 36.50, an economy rate of 6.08, and a strike rate of 36.00.

T20I

He played his first T20I debut on 1 September 2023 against New Zealand at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Manchester, England and took 4 wickets for 20 runs which was the best bowling figure by an English bowler on T20 debut.

League

The Hundred

In 2021, he played for Southern Brave in the 100-ball tournament The Hundred and emerged as the winner of the tournament. In the 2022 and 2023 editions of the tournament, he played for Oval Invincibles.

International League T20 (ILT20)

In the inaugural edition of the ILT20 league in 2023, he played for Desert Vipers. In the second season in 2024, he was replaced by Tymal Mills as he could not play due to the tour of India by the national team.

In the 2022 and 2023 seasons of T10 League, he played for Northern Warriors.

In the 8th season of PSL in 2023, he played for Islamabad United.
