He studied at Southwell School in Hamilton and later at St Paul’s Collegiate School. He lived in Manchester and London for two years during his childhood. He liked playing cricket and used to play cricket in his backyard when he was ten.

In 2006, he, along with his family, moved to Perth, Australia when his father was appointed as the head coach of the Western Force rugby union team in the Super 14 Rugby competition. He studied at the Hale School in Perth from 2005 to 2008.

Career

Domestic – Australia

He represented Hale in school cricket for three years and later played club cricket for Scarborough for two years, playing alongside Marcus Stoinis and Justin Langer. He has also represented Western Australia Under 19, Under 23, and the Australian Centre of Excellence in third-tier cricket tournaments. He trained under Neil ‘Noddy’ Holder during his time in Australia.

Domestic – New Zealand

In 2011, he started playing for Northern Districts in the New Zealand domestic circuit and played his first List A (one-day) match against Canterbury on 4 December 2011. He played his debut first-class match on 18 March 2012 against Auckland and his debut T20 match against Canterbury on 30 November 2012.

He also played for Waikato Valley in the 2011 season. He played domestic cricket for around 8 years before making his debut for the national team of New Zealand. He moved to Canterbury from Northern Districts in June 2020.

International

New Zealand A & New Zealand XI

He debuted for New Zealand A in the 2013-14 season. He played for the New Zealand XI in 2020 and captained them during the series against India A.

Test

Daryl Mitchell played his first test match on 29 November 2019 against England in Hamilton, New Zealand and scored 73 runs in the first innings, making his first test fifty on his debut. His first test century was against Pakistan with 102 runs not out in the first innings.

In June 2022, he scored 190 runs in the first innings and 62 runs not out in the second innings against England. During the 2022 series against England, he scored 482 runs in 3 tests, the most runs by a New Zealand player in a test series against England.

 

ODI

He made his debut in ODIs on 20 March 2021 against Bangladesh in Dunedin, New Zealand. He made his first ODI century on 26 March 2021 with a score of 100 runs not out against Bangladesh. He made his maiden ODI fifty on 31 July 2022 with 74 runs not out against Scotland.

ODI World Cup

He played in the 2023 ODI World Cup, and on 13 October 2023, he scored 89 runs not out to secure a victory over Bangladesh in the group stage match. He made his first ODI World Cup hundred with 130 runs against India in the group stage match held at Dharamshala.

T20I

He played his debut T20I match on 6 February 2019 against India in which he scored 8 runs.

T20 World Cup

He played 7 matches in the 2021 T20 World Cup and scored 208 runs with a strike rate of 140.54 at an average of 34.67; he helped New Zealand enter the finals by scoring his first T20I half-century with 72 runs not out in the semifinal against England. He played 4 matches in the 2022 T20 World Cup and scored 109 runs with a strike rate of 128.24 at an average of 54.50; he scored 53 runs not out in the semifinal against Pakistan which New Zealand lost.

He played for Blackpool in the 2016 season of the Northern Premier League.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

He was acquired by Rajasthan Royals (RR) for his base price of Rs 75 lakhs in the 2022 IPL auction and played two matches for them before being released. In the 2023 IPL auction, he went unsold against his base price of Rs 1 crore.
