Career
Politics
He served as the Treasurer of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) for more than three decades since the 1980s. In 1969, he became the Municipal Councillor in the Davanagere municipality. He began his political journey as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, serving from 1998 to 1999, representing the Davanagere constituency. He was later appointed Minister of Horticulture and Agricultural Marketing from 2013 to 2016. He has also been an active member of the Legislative Assembly in Karnataka since 2004, representing the Davangere South constituency.
Education
He is the chairman of Bapuji Educational Association which owns a chain of more than 50 educational institutions including the Bapuji Institute of Engineering & Technology, JJM medical college, Bapuji Dental College and Hospital and College of Pharmacy, Law and Polytechnic.
Business
He is the owner of the Shamanur Group, a conglomerate that specializes in the sugar and distilleries industries including Shamanur Sugars Pvt. Ltd., Duggavatti, Davangere and Indian cane power Ltd., Mudhol, Bijapur district.
Philanthropy
He established Dr Shamanur Shivashankarappa Janakalyna Trust in 2012 by depositing Rs 5 crores. The interest from this deposit is used to provide scholarships to the economically weaker students of Davangere.
He established Bapuji Cooperative Bank in 1986. He has established dining halls in temples, marriage halls, parks and lakes in the area to help the people. He has served as the President of Angavikalara Ashakirana Trust, Davangere, Davangere cricket club, Davangere, and Davans sports club, Davangere. During the Covid-19 lockdown, he purchased 60000 vaccine doses by paying Rs 6 crores for the underprivileged. He also spread awareness among the public to make Devangere a smart city.
