Jaya G. Nair

Jaya Nair is an Indian scientist and computer engineer, who worked with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). She is the wife of S. Unnikrishnan Nair who is the director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC). He was a part of the team of scientists who worked on India’s third lunar probe mission, Chandrayaan-3, which landed successfully on the moon in August 2023.

He is known for leading India’s first Human Spaceflight Program (HSP) and playing a vital role in conducting numerous experiments aimed at developing Gaganyaan, which is the spacecraft meant to carry Indian astronauts to space by 2025. He was also aboard the team of scientists that worked on the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Unnikrishnan has played an important role in the designing and development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), and Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM3).

The couple has two daughters, Aishwarya Nair, who is an architect, and Chaithanya Nair, who holds a degree in psychology. Chaithanya is a model and actress, and she appeared in a small role in the 2022 Malayalam film Jana Gana Mana.

Career

In 1988, Jaya G. Nair joined the National Center for Software Technology (NCST) as an engineer; she worked there till 1989. She joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center as a scientist in August 1989. She worked there on numerous projects. After working there for many years, she left ISRO and relocated to Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
