The Great Khali aka Dalip Singh Rana was born on Sunday, 27 August 1972 (age 51 years; as of 2024) in Dhiraina village of Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, India. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He also worked as a stone crusher and later got a job as a bodyguard of a businessman who owned many restaurants in Shimla and earned a salary of Rs 1500.

In Royal Rumble 25 in January 2012, he was eliminated by Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler. Khali was defeated by Cesaro during the United States Championship match on 2 January 2013.

Causing a wrestler’s death

Khali trained in All Pro Wrestling (APW) in 2001 under his ring name Giant Singh. When he was training with a wrestler named Brian Ong on 28 May 2001, he hit him with a flapjack wrestling move due to which Ong died. In January 2011, he visited the house of the Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Satpal Gosain, when people gathered outside Gosain’s house to click selfies. In March 2018, Vinit Kumar Bansal, co-writer of Khali’s autobiography, filed a case against him and accused of selling his autobiography rights to a film producer without informing or giving Bansal a 30% royalty as per his contract. On 11 July 2022, Khali was going from Jalandhar, Punjab to Karnal, Haryana when he got into a fight with toll booth operators of the Ladhowal Toll Plaza in Phillaur. The toll booth staff alleged that Khali slapped one of the operators when he asked for the ID card and also tried to forcibly remove the barricades.

Khali took to Instagram to share his side of the story and claimed that the toll booth operator asked him for a selfie in a rude manner and when Khali denied it, he started abusing him. • The Great Khali has often called childhood an unusual one as he did several odd jobs, starting at the age of 8. When he used to pick pebbles from the river as an 8-year-old child, he only had one kurta and one underwear (he wore Kacha, a type of underwear worn with a thread to hold it). One day, the thread broke off due to which his underwear came off, and his colleagues started making fun of him. He could not afford any other underwear and paid 50 paise to get the thread sewn off.

• When Khali worked in a road construction company in Shimla at the age of 10, he was promised a daily salary of Rs 15 for the 3-month contract period. At the end of 3 months, he was paid only Rs 460 instead of Rs 1250, hence he felt cheated and went to the contractor the next day along with his father and two other people from his village. Initially, the contractor refused to pay any money and started abusing them; however, he later paid Rs 600 after Khali and other people threatened to beat him up. According to Khali, this incident taught him that one should stand up for himself when things go wrong.

• The Great Khali joined the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) as a constable in 1993 and later became a sub-inspector.

#TakeDownJulienBlanc

In November 2014, activist Jennifer Li launched a campaign named #TakeDownJulienBlanc. She aimed to keep Blanc from spreading his opinions which were considered to be racist and misogynistic, especially since he was the host of seminars and workshops. Blanc faced backlash after he uploaded a video to his YouTube in September 2014 about his trip to Tokyo, which he removed after the criticism he faced. The co-founder of RSD, Owen Cook commented that the video Of Blanc’s trip was taken “out of context” and was posted for its shock value. The comments he made that brought him the most backlash was,

Just grab her… To take the pressure off, yell Pikachu or Pokemon or Tamagotchi or something. At least in Tokyo, if you’re a white man, you can do what you want.” ^[3]IBT

Blanc also posted pictures of him assaulting women and used the hashtag #ChokingGirlsAroundTheWorld. Jennifer Li’s hashtag went viral on Twitter and got over 50,000 mentions within the first week. Blanc started receiving backlash for charging a high fee for his seminar and promoting emotional abuse and physical violence against women. He was criticised for promoting domestic violence as a form of seduction. After the hashtag got famous, the famous hacktivist (activist hackers) collective, Anonymous called for a ban on pick-up seminars like the ones hosted by Blanc. This brought more backlash against Blanc. Anonymous made a post asking people to protest against Blanc, report his videos, and call on authorities to ban his visas and seminars. Due to the #TakeDownJulienBlanc campaign, Blanc was denied visas in Australia, Brazil, the UK, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. Ten venues and online platforms also refused to host him or his company, Real Social Dynamics. He started being referred to as “the most hated man in the world”.

Online Petitions Against Blanc

The first petition on Change.org, created in 2014, accused Julien Blanc of promoting “violence and emotional abuse against women”. Thousands of people signed the petition, which led to Australia revoking Blanc’s visa that he applied for to host a seminar in Melbourne. Petitions to stop Blanc from conducting seminars were made in Japan, Canada, the UK, and Brazil as well and the signatures from all the petitions totalled over 3 lakhs. His remarks, seen as promoting sexual harassment and assault, were criticised by organisations like the End Violence Against Women Coalition. Blanc apologised for his behaviour during an interview with CNN (Cable News Network) in November 2014. He said,

I just want to apologise to anyone I’ve offended in any way. This was never my intention and I just want to put it out there…I’m extremely sorry. Like, I feel horrible. I’m not going to be happy to feel like I’m the most hated man in the world. I’m overwhelmed by the way people are responding.” ^[4]The Guardian

In his apology, he also disagreed with the allegations of him promoting emotional and physical violence against women. He stated that his videos and comments were a “horrible, horrible attempt at humour”.

Controversial Blog Post About San Fransisco

In 2017, Sam Altman faced criticism from people on the internet and those in the tech industry for comments he made in his blog about the political and social climate of San Fransisco. The article, whose title is “E Pur Si Muove” (Italian for “and yet it moves”, a quote by Galileo Galilei) was published on Altman’s blog. In the blog, he said that San Fransisco’s social climate was not kind towards free speech and caused smart people to leave the area. He also stated that he was more comfortable discussing controversial ideas in Beijing, China, than in San Francisco. Altman suggested that allowing “offensive remarks” might be necessary to develop new ideas. He said,

This is uncomfortable, but it’s possible we have to allow people to say disparaging things about gay people if we want them to be able to say novel things about physics. Thiel, a billionaire and Facebook board member defended Trump’s controversial Muslim ban and supports Trump financially. Altman and Thiel are reported to be close friends. Despite calls for Y Combinator to distance itself from Thiel due to his support for Trump, Altman refused to do so. Open AI Controversy

On 17 November 2023, OpenAI’s board of directors removed CEO Sam Altman. They put out a statement mentioning the reason was his lack of consistent honesty with the directors. Altman considered publicly apologising for misrepresenting board members’ views during discussions about a director’s removal, but the board was concerned that this could simplify the firing to a single incident. The board’s decision was based on concerns about Altman’s strategic operations and a lack of transparency in communications. The board didn’t provide a detailed reasoning for Altman’s removal but mentioned that an independent investigation was being conducted and that the decision was a result of months spent evaluating Altman’s leadership. A few days after Altman was fired, the CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, made a public statement where he said Altman would be hired as the chief executive of their AI research lab.

Target of Racism

Taral Patel in September 2023 revealed that he faced racist and hateful messages on social media.
