Shilpa Shinde is an Indian actress. She has acted in Telugu and Marathi films and is well known for acting in Hindi serials. She is best known for her portrayal of the role of Angoori Bhabhi in “Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hai!”. She entered the Bigg Boss 11 (2017) house as a celebrity contestant and went on to win the show.

Shilpa Shinde was born on Sunday, 28 August 1977 (age 46 years; as of 2024) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her zodiac sign is Virgo. She started pursuing a Bachelor’s in Psychology but did not complete the course.

Parents & Siblings 

Her father’s name is Dr. Satyadeo Shinde (deceased). He was a High Court judge. He passed away in 2013 due to Alzheimer’s disease. Her mother, Geeta Satyadeo Shinde, is a homemaker. Shilpa has three siblings. Her elder sisters are Archana and Shubha Shinde, and her younger brother is Ashutosh Shinde.

Relationships/Affairs

Romit Raj 

In 2007, she fell in love with her co-star Romit Raj on the set of the TV show, Maayka (2007 to 2009). They got engaged in 2009 and were supposed to tie the knot in Goa in November 2009. The wedding was called off at the last moment. She also called him “calculative and domineering”. Her mother mentioned that the couple and both families had very different views, which led to the match not working. Shilpa revealed that she stepped back as she felt she was too young to be married.

Sidharth Shukla 

Shilpa Shinde revealed that she got into a relationship with Sidharth Shukla (1980-2021) in 2011. He was an actor, host, and model who passed away due to a heart attack. Shilpa stated that the relationship was toxic and abusive, and only ended once Sidharth got a role in the TV series, Balika Vadhu. Shilpa alleged that he used to physically abuse her and had once thrown her out of a moving car. She mentioned in an interview that she filed a police complaint against him. Speaking about their relationship, Shilpa said,

Shilpa follows Hinduism. She is a spiritual person and a devotee of Lord Ganesha & Shirdi’s Sai Baba. She always has a picture of Shirdi’s Sai Baba in her purse.

Career

Films

Shilpa Shinde started her career with Marathi and Telugu films. In 2001, she acted in the Telugu films Chhina and Shivani. In 2004, she played the character Madhavi in the Marathi film, Lek Ladki Ya Gharchi. In 2017, she made a special appearance as a dancer in the Hindi film, Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi. She performed an item song.

Television

When she didn’t experience much success acting in films, she decided to work in TV serials, and in 2002, she played her first role as a negative character, Manju, in the serial Bhabhi (2002 to 2008).

She started gaining recognition with her role in Kabhi Aaye Na Judaai (2001). She then acted in the show Sanjivani: A Medical Boon (2002). In 2002, she also played the main role in the show Amrapali. In January 2004, she was in a show called Meher – Kahani Haq Aur Haqeeqat Ki, where she was one of the main characters. In 2006, she acted in Hari Mirchi Lal Mirchi where she replaced other actresses to play the role of Rinku Khanna. Her big break came when she played Koyal Ghotak Narayan in the 2011 TV sitcom, Chidiya Ghar. She first left the show in March 2013 and was replaced by Shubhangi Atre. Shubhangi played Koyal for a year before Shilpa returned. She left once again in 2014. In an interview, she revealed why she took the step to leave,

I was promised a lot of things and told that the character will have an interesting graph. However, the producer has failed to keep his promise. Since I wasn’t too happy with my track, I quit the show.” ^[2]The Times of India

She played her second negative role in 2013, on the show Do Dil Ek Jaan. In 2015, she played a lead role in another TV show called Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! where she became very famous for playing Angoori Bhabhi.

Her catchphrases, such as – “Sahi Pakde Hain,” “Ladoo Ke Bhaiya,” and “Haye Daiya,” and her poor English speaking skills, made her extremely famous and the most lovable character of the show.

However, she left this show in March 2016 because of issues with the makers. Her character was then played by another actress. In 2017, she participated in the reality show Bigg Boss Season 11 (Padosi Bajayenge Barah) as a celebrity contestant. She won the show in January 2018. Her prize money was worth Rs. 50,000. In Bigg Boss, she was referred to as “maa” (mother) as she took care of kitchen duties and cooked for all the contestants. Although her methods were questioned, she stuck to her role.

In 2020, she was on a show called Gangs of Filmistan but later left due to issues with the producers. In December 2020, she acted in a web series called Paurashpur. In 2022, she was on a dance reality show called Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 10. She got eliminated in Week 7 and was placed 12th.

In October 2022, after being eliminated, she criticized Karan Johar, Madhuri Dixit, and Nora Fatehi. According to Shinde, contestants were harshly judged by the judges, and she asked the judges to be kinder. ^[3]NDTV While sharing a video on Instagram, she said,

In 2023, she did a cameo as a policewoman in a show called Maddam Sir.

Politics

On 5 February 2019, she entered politics by joining Rahul Gandhi‘s Indian National Congress (INC) in Mumbai. In an interview, she mentioned that she would contest in the Lok Sabha 2019 elections, but she didn’t follow through. She also mentioned that she was inspired to become a politician by the late actor turned politician, Sunil Dutt. Controversies

Sexual Harassment On The Set Of Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hai!

Shilpa left the show Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hai! in 2016 after getting into a fight with the show’s producers. She claimed that she was being “mentally tortured” by the producers. She accused producer Binaifer Kohli of being a tyrant and initiated legal action against her. She then accused Binaifer’s husband, Sanjay Kholi, of sexually harassing her.

Binaifer accused Shilpa of committing a breach of contract and having an “irresponsible attitude” and approached CINTAA (Cine And TV Artistes’ Association) to take action. Shilpa filed a defamation case against the producer, CINTAA and the Indian Films and TV Producers’ Council (IFTPC). She took the support of MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) chief, Raj Thackeray. After she exited from the show, its viewership numbers dipped. After a year of being involved in a legal battle regarding breach of contract, Shilpa and the producers reached a settlement.

Banned By CINTAA

In 2016, it was reported that Shilpa Shinde was banned by the Cine And TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) from working with broadcasters. Allegedly, the producer of “Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hai!”, Binaifer Kohli approached CINTAA after the issues between the producers and Shilpa. Later, the chairman of CINTAA’s dispute committee stated that Shilpa was not banned, but they did demand an explanation and monetary compensation for causing a loss to the channel and producer. He stated that CINTAA cannot ban anyone as it is a trade union. He said,

There is no ban. We are just issuing a letter from the federation, by the producers’ body and CINTAA asking Shilpa to give an explanation and there has to be a monetary compensation because the channel and the producer have undergone a loss.” ^[5]India Today

Shilpa made a statement revealing that she filed a case against CINTAA for banning her.

War Of Words With Gulki Joshi

After completing her cameo on the television show “Maddam Sir”, Shilpa had a war of words with actress Gulki Joshi. She bashed the leading ladies of the show through a video on Instagram and said that the cast and crew of the show were not involved in the shooting with zeal. Gulki responded that they had no idea why she was lashing out at them. Shilpa mocked Gulki saying the latter became popular only because of Shilpa. She made several other comments against other cast and crew members of Maddam Sir. While responding to Shilpa’s comment, Gulki said,

I don’t think so it was a personal attack. It was done so that she can stay in limelight. These comments can’t affect us. Woh kuch bhi bol le, but the amount of love that I have got from this controversy is beyond life. Meri following badha di usne.” ^[6]Koimoi

Feud With Vikas Gupta

Shilpa Shinde often argued with television producer, Vikas Gupta, on Bigg Boss 11. Shilpa accused Vikas of taking jobs away from her. She also revealed that Vikas Gupta and the producers of Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! tried to stop her from participating in Bigg Boss. In an interview, she revealed that Vikas was involved in filing a criminal case against her to keep her out of Bigg Boss.

In 2020, Vikas Gupta took to social media to criticise Shilpa Shinde. Shilpa found herself to be a part of Gupta’s “call them out” series on Instagram, where he accused and criticised people who made him “suffer”. He mentioned that he lost all respect for the television actress and that he didn’t file any case as she claimed. He went on to say,

You left 7 shows, others are scared of you, and that’s why they don’t want to work with you. I haven’t banned you. Cine & TV Artists Association (CINTAA) voted against her. She made claims in the press that everyone in the CINTAA team has exploited her and that’s why they filed a case against Shilpa. I did not file any case against her.”

Controversy With Preeti And Neeti Simoes

In 2020, Shilpa, who quit the TV show “Gangs Of Filmistan,” was upset with producers Preeti and Neeti Simoes. The producers alleged that Shilpa left their show without approaching them directly. Preeti Simoes said,

The team is surprised at her sudden reaction as she did not communicate her grievances on sets. I don’t know what the problem is.” ^[7]Bollywood Bubble

Shilpa responded by posting screenshots of their chats and emails on her Instagram.

Shilpa also felt she wasn’t properly informed about her role in the show and was unhappy working with Sunil Grover. She also mentioned she got sick after working on the show and now has COVID-19 symptoms. She revealed that the actors were being exploited on set and worked for extremely long hours. She also complained about how the number of shoot days was extended. Shilpa shared proof that they had a direct conversation and that everything ended on a seemingly happy note. Twitter Feud With Gauahar Khan

Shilpa Shinde (winner of Bigg Boss Season 11) and Gauahar Khan (winner of Bigg Boss Season 7), got into a social media fight in 2018. It started after Shilpa posted a meme making fun of Karanvir Bohra’s wife, Teejay Sidhu. The tweet was referencing Teejay’s criticism of the show in an open letter. Shilpa received many negative comments for it on Twitter. Gauahar Khan, another winner from a past season, spoke up on Twitter and indirectly attacked Shilpa for being mean.

The Twitter fight caught a lot of attention with Shilpa and Gauahar getting negative comments as well as support. People also argued about who was “right” in the situation.

Salary

Shilpa made Rs. 35,000 per episode while working in “Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai!”. In 2017-18, Shilpa was paid Rs. 6 to 7 lakhs for every week that she spent in the Bigg Boss 11 house. In 2022, she charged Rs. 5 lakh per episode to appear on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 10.

Tattoo

Shilpa has a tattoo on her left forearm to honour her deceased father. The tattoo is of the word “papa” with a halo and angel wings. According to her brother, Ashutosh, Shilpa did not like tattoos. She decided to get one upon the death of her father, with whom she was extremely close.
