Leati Joseph Anoaʻi or famously Roman Reigns was born on May 25, 1985, in Pensacola, Florida, USA. He with his in-ring skills and physical attributes earned himself nicknames like Joe, The Big Dog, The Juggernaut, The Powerhouse, The Guy. He came into the spotlight when he along with Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose formed the Shield in November 2012.

Before entering the world of wrestling, he played football. He though was not able to make it big there and decided to retire from football to focus on his wrestling career. He broke the scenes in WWE and became one of the top wrestlers in the WWE roster.

He married Galina Becker, a fitness model in December 2014 at Disney’s Castaway Cay Bahamas. He first met Galina when they both were students at Georgia Institute of Technology.

They are blessed with three children, a daughter, Joelle Anoa’i, born in 2008 and twin sons born in 2017.

He has a whole lineage of wrestlers in his family. He is the first cousin to ‘The Usos,’ which consists of the two real-life twin brothers Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso, and is related to Yokozuna, Umaga, and Rikishi. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Roman Reigns are distant cousins since their grandfathers – Peter Maivia and Amituana Anoa’i – were blood brothers.

He did his schooling from Pensacola Catholic High School, Pensacola, Florida and Escambia High School, Escambia County, Florida. After completing his High School he went to Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia and completed Majors in Management.

Career

Initially, he wanted to be a professional football player. In May 2007, he was signed by Minnesota Vikings in the NFL. He was released later that month. In August, Jacksonville Jaguars signed him but they too released him within a week. He then played a season in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for Edmonton Eskimos in the 2008-2009 season. He then retired from football to start concentrating on wrestling.

In 2010, he signed a developmental contract with the WWE and was drafted to FCW, with the ring name “Leakee.” He lost to Richie Steamboat in his debut FCW match and got his first win against Fahd Rakman. In 2012, after the rebranding of FCW to NXT, he changed his ring name to Roman Reigns.

His NXT career in singles competitions only lasted 3 matches after which he was called up to the main roster with ‘The Shield.’ In 2012, The Shield’ made an astonishing debut on the WWE main roster by attacking Ryback and John Cena during the Survivor Series pay-per-view by helping out CM Punk to retain the WWE Championship.

In 2014, after the dissolution of the Shield, he started to headline RAW and pay-per-view events of the WWE. After John Cena, the company pushed him to be the new face of WWE while he is also one of the most polarised superstars in WWE. He is widely criticised by fans for his below-par mic skills, and his bland character.

• In 2016, Roman Reigns was charged with violating the WWE Wellness Policy. As a result, he was suspended for 30 days. WWE doesn’t usually make the names of the drug’s public, so there is no knowing what Roman Reigns consumed. Richard Rodriguez, the now-imprisoned former owner of the Wellness Fitness Nutrition company of Miami, named Reigns, and few other celebrities, as his former client, but Reigns denied the statement by saying, “I have never heard of Richard Rodriguez or Wellness Fitness Nutrition. I learned from the mistake I made nearly two years ago and paid the penalty for it. Since then, I’ve passed 11 tests as part of WWE’s independent drug testing program.”
