Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is an Indian Badminton Player. She is the only Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. In March 2015, Sindhu was honoured with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour of India, for her contribution towards sports. In 2018, she ranked seventh in the Forbes list of “Highest-Paid Female Athletes” and stood first on Forbes India’s first list of 22 Young Achievers.

P. V. Sindhu was born on 5 July 1995 (age 27 years; as of 2022) in Hyderabad. Her zodiac sign is Cancer.

She attended Auxilium High School. She was good at studies in her childhood and wanted to be a doctor. Sindhu started playing Badminton when she was just 8 and a half year old. Initially, she played it for fun but soon she realised that she wanted to make a career in it. She enrolled herself at the Indian Railway Institute in Secunderabad to learn the basics of the game from Mehboob Ali and later joined Pullela Gopichand’s badminton academy to enhance her skills. Sindhu is till date (as in 2019) coached by Pullela Gopichand. Notably, he is also the chief coach of the Indian Badminton team. Thereafter, she enrolled herself in St. Ann’s College for Women to pursue MBA.

P. V. Sindhu is the daughter of P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya. Both her parents are former Volleyball players. Her father, P. V. Ramana, was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his contribution towards sports. She has an elder sister, Divyaram Pusarla, who was a national-level handball player and later became a doctor.

Career

Sindhu made her international debut as a Badminton Player in 2009 in the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo and won the bronze medal. Next, she played at the 2010 Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge, where she bagged the silver medal in the singles category. In 2011, she won a Gold medal in the singles event at the Douglas Commonwealth Youth Games. It was the turning point of her life. However, her best performance came in 2012, when she defeated the 2012 London Olympics gold medalist Li Xuerui of China at the Li Ning China Masters Super Series competition. In 2013, Sindhu became the first Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championship. Subsequently, She defeated Japanese Nozomi Okuhara in the semifinals of the 2016 Summer Olympics and made her entry into the finals. With this, she became the first Indian shuttler to reach the final of the 2016 Summer Olympics. She even became the youngest Indian to make a podium finish in an individual event at the Olympics. However, Sidhu was defeated by Carolina Marin in the 83-minute final match, winning her a silver medal at the Summer Olympics. In 2018, she secured the World Tour title after defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the 2018 World Tour final.

 

On 1 August 2021, she became the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals when she beat China’s He Bing Jiao 21-13, 21-15 to win the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In July 2022, she won the Singapore Open title; she defeated Zhi Yi Wang of China.
