Hina Khan is an Indian actress. She commonly works in Hindi films and television shows. She is best known for playing ‘Akshara’ in Star Plus’ daily soap Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. She entered the Bigg Boss 11 (2017) house as a celebrity contestant.

She has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Gargi College, Delhi University. She worked in a call centre while doing her MBA.

Rocky Jaiswal

Hina met Rocky Jaiswal (real name, Jayant Jaiswal), on the sets of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (2009), where he was the supervising director. They met in 2009 and were rumoured to have started dating during the show. Hina referred to Rocky as her boyfriend during Bigg Boss Season 11 (2017). In 2022, when rumours of their break up were going around, Hina confirmed they were still together.

Television

Hina Khan moved from Srinagar to Delhi for her education. When she was 20 years old, she moved to Mumbai after being chosen as a lead for a TV show. Once her parents found out, they agreed to let her continue acting only if she completed her studies. Until she finished studying, she travelled from Mumbai to Delhi to finish shooting and writing her exams. In 2009, she joined the TV show “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai”, where she played the character Akshara Singhania. Her performance earned her many nominations and awards. She left the show in 2016 to “pursue other projects”.

From 2018 to 2019, she starred in the show “Kasautii Zindagii Kay” as Komolika Chaubey Basu. She has made several special appearances on TV shows. In 2009, she appeared on shows such as “Kayamath”, “Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan”, and the reality show “Perfect Bride”. In March 2022, Hina announced that we would be starring in a web series named Seven One as a police officer.

Hina Khan participated in the auditions for the singing reality show, India Idol in 2008. She reached the Top 30 in Delhi. In 2013, she appeared on Masterchef – Kitchen Ke Superstars as herself. In 2017, she was a contestant on Colors TV’s adventure show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 8. She was the first runner-up of the show.

In September 2017, she participated in Bigg Boss Season 11 (Padosi Bajayenge Barah) as a celebrity contestant. She earned the position of first runner-up and the title of Sher Khan in January 2018.

In 2019, she appeared on Bigg Boss Season 13 (Bigg Boss Tedha). She also appeared in the 2019 Bigg Boss Season 15 (Sankat in Jungle/Pan Pana Pan Pandrah). In 2020, she participated in Bigg Boss Season 14 (Ab Scene Paltega) as a “senior”. In 2023, she participated in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 13 as a challenger.

Films

In 2019, she attended the Cannes Film Festival, where her debut film Lines (2021) launched its first look. Hina Khan starred in the 2020 short film, SmartPhone. In 2020, she acted in and produced the film Wishlist. She then starred and co-produced the 2021 Hindi film, Lines.

She also starred in the film Shadyantra (2022). In 2023, Hina starred in the film Country of Blind. It was in contention to be nominated for the 2024 Oscars but was not taken forward. In 2023, she also announced that she was working on a new film, Qahar.

Music Videos

She starred in many music videos in May 2021, she appeared in the music video ‘Patthar Wargi’ for T-Series alongside Tanmay Singh. Following that, in June 2021, she starred in another song titled ‘Baarish Ban Jana’ with Shaheer Sheikh, which was filmed in Kashmir. Stebin Ben and Payal Dev sang the song. In September 2021, her music video ‘Main Bhi Barbaad’ sung by Yaseer Desai was released, where she starred opposite Angad Bedi.

In 2023, Shaheer Sheikh and Hina starred in the music video of the song Barsaat Aa Gayi sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Stebin Ben.

In 2024, she and Munawar Faruqui starred in the music video of Halki Halki Si sung by Asees Kaur and Saaj Bhatt.

Modelling

Hina Khan has modelled for magazines, and designers, and walked on fashion runways. In 2018, she walked the ramp for Streax Professional. In 2020, she walked in the Bombay Times Fashion Week for the Karleo clothing brand.

In 2023, she walked the ramp at the Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). She was featured on the January 2023 magazine cover of GlobalSpa and the June 2023 cover of iDiva.

Controversies

Legal Notice Against PRaxis Media

In July 2018, Hina Khan sent a legal notice to the company PRaxis Media whose services she used for the Dadasaheb Phalke Awards Ceremony. According to the notice, Hina was given a choice of two pieces of jewellery from which she chose one. The other was misplaced in the process of being returned. According to the notice, Hemlata Periwal was in charge of the same and she admitted that Hina was not at fault for the misplacement. However, the company released an unsigned legal notice to the press to defame Hina. The unsigned notice stated that Hina had not returned jewellery worth Rs. 11 lakh. Through her lawyer, Hina sent a legal notice to the company demanding an apology within five days. She threatened to file a civil and criminal case if they did not apologise and clear up their mistakes.

Comments Against South Indian Film Industry

When Hina was on Bigg Boss, she revealed that she refused offers from the South Indian film industry as they asked her to gain weight. She said,

South mein aise chahiye unhe bulging sab. (They like to cast women who are on the heavier side)” ^[1]India Today

She received a lot of criticism from co-contestants and the public. Actresses Hansika Motwani, Kajal Agarwal and Kriti Kharbanda also spoke against her. Kriti said,

I had great respect for Hina Khan before that. She is a very big name on television. That is not how you talk about people. You can look at me, I have been an actress down south (and I am not bulgy). There is no need to (say such things on national television). It’s rather unfortunate that an actor is talking like that, and an actor of that caliber, that too.” ^[2]India Today

Issues On Bigg Boss 11

Hina Khan got into several fights and controversies during Bigg Boss Season 11. Several fans have called out Hina for having double standards and being a liar. Apart from her comment on the South Indian film industry, she has made other controversial statements that she faced a lot of criticism for. She often fought with Shilpa Shinde and made fun of her poor English skills. After failing at a task on Bigg Boss, she blamed the loss on Shilpa’s poor English. She also made other negative remarks against Shilpa such as,

She called actress Sakshi Tanwar cross-eyed and accused actress Sunny Leone of buying followers on social media, comments that brought negative comments against her. The internet went against her, which allegedly contributed to her not winning season 11.
