Acharya Vidyasagar (1946-2024) was an Indian Digambara Jain Acharya, also known as a Digambar Jain Monk. He was famous for being very knowledgeable, practising austerity (tapasya), and spending long periods in meditation. He died at the age of 77 on 18 February 2024 after following Sallekhana.

In 1972, Vidyasagar received the status of Acharya. The number of monks (munis) and nuns (āryikas) initiated and guided by him exceeds two hundred (117 Digambar Muni, 172 Āryikas). He was the only Acharya in the country to have bestowed 505 Muni, Āryika, Ailak, and Kshulak initiations thus far. As a traditional Digambara Jain monk, Acharya Vidyasagar tried not to stay at a single location for more than a few days, except during the four months of the rainy season (Chaturmas). In 2016, he delivered his Pravachana (reading) in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly by special invitation from Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on 28 July 2016. In 2018, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honoured Vidyasagar with the State Guest Honor upon Vidyasagar. The fiftieth anniversary of his diksha was celebrated in many cities across India with parades and festivities in July 2018.

Works

Acharya Vidyasagar was proficient in many languages including Sanskrit, Prakrit, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, and English and wrote extensively in these languages. Some of his notable works include Niranjana Shataka, Bhavana Shataka, Parishah Jaya Shataka, Suniti Shataka, and Shramana Shataka. He also composed around 700 haiku poems, although they remain unpublished. ^[7]Vidyasagar One of his significant contributions is the Hindi epic poem ‘Mukamati,’ which has been incorporated into the syllabus of Hindi MA programs in various institutions. Many researchers have explored his works for their master’s and doctoral theses. Acharya renounced his Acharyahood and commenced sallekhana on 16 February 2024, at Chandragiri Tirth in Dongargarh. In May 1951, while Keshav Patel was pursuing his graduation, he met Pramukh Swami Maharaj for the first time when he along with his disciples visited Keshav Patel’s house. According to Mahant Swami Maharaj, Yogiji Maharaj sincerely apologized to him for any inconvenience he may have caused as he left his house. Initiation as a Sadhu

In 1960, Vinu Bhagat was ordained for the second time as a pārshad by Pramukh Swami Maharaj at Kapolvadi, Mumbai along with his 8 other disciples. These 9 disciples were known as ‘Nav Yogeshwars.’

In 1961, Pramukh Swami Maharaj initiated Vinu Bhagat and 50 other disciples as Sadhu. Vinu Bhagat was the first person among the 51 to get the bhāgwati dikshā, and Yogiji Maharaj gave him the name Sadhu Keshavjivandas. After the initiation of the Sadhus, Swamiji gave Sadhu Keshavjivandas the responsibility of overseeing the young Sadhus and appointed him as the ‘Mahant’ of Dadar Mandir in Mumbai. There he got his name, Mahant Swami.

Volunteering and services at BAPS

He devoted himself to Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the new guru, in 1971 after the passing of Yogiji Maharaj. He visited various states and cities all across India and also visited foreign countries. Since 1971, following Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s instructions, Swami Maharaj dedicated himself to uplifting and fortifying the Satsang community. He has volunteered his services for Akshardham initiatives, children’s and youth programs, and various Satsang events during the BAPS mega-festivals.

World Tour 

In 1986, Mahant Swami Maharaj led a group of Sadhus on a world tour where they did research to create exhibits of Akshardham in Gandhinagar. In 1988, Mahant Swami Maharaj led a group of Sadhus to 17 countries including Nairobi for Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s 68th birthday celebrations. ^[2]BAPS

Controversies

Arrested under POCSO Act

In September 2022, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was arrested because of the accusations made against him of sexual assault; he was charged with rape and sexual harassment. The FIR was lodged by minor girls aged 15 and 16, who were staying in a mutt-run hostel, and the girls accused Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru of ‘sexually abusing’ them for a couple of years. A case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the seer was arrested from his house in Bankhapura town in Karnataka. Navy Official

After completing his graduation, he joined the United States Navy in 1962. He once shared that on his father’s will, he joined the Navy. On the first day of his job, a sailor clerk assigned him work in the gunnery department. Goswami told the clerk that he did not like guns and shared his desire to work as a writer. The clerk advised him to join the Public Information Office, where their primary task was to produce an in-house newspaper for the ships. He started writing articles for a column in the newspaper. However, most of his articles had a leftist influence which was not appreciated by the senior officers there. The Public Information Office also published a monthly magazine for which Goswami penned articles on the authors James Joyce and William Faulkner. However, some officers on the ship did not like his articles and asked him to stop writing them. Later, he left his job there.

A Writer

After leaving his job in the Navy, he moved to the Lower East Side of New York. This came as a shock to his parents as they were happy with his stable job. Gradually, they accepted his decision. Since his college days, he had a keen interest in becoming a writer. At that time, he used to read the books of various authors like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Thoreau, and Rainer Maria Rilke which inspired him to become a writer. It is also said that to concentrate on his writing, he used to consume marijuana, after which he wrote various manuscripts, stories, and poems.

Once, while he was at a shop he saw a notice on the window shop which was about Bhagavad Gita classes. Within a week, the shop was converted into an ISKCON temple, and he decided to join the ISKCON group. After the shop was converted into the ISKCON temple in July 1966 at 26 Second Avenue, New York, US, he started working as a typist of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, founder of ISKCON. A few months later, he got a job as ISKCON secretary. A few years later, he got the responsibility of managing ISKCON Boston and ISKCON Press, which was later registered as Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. Deteroriation of Health

In 2002, he experienced a physical and emotional breakdown due to his regular migraine headaches. This condition required immediate medical help and care. With the guidance of the Governing Body Commission, he kept his Goswami title and continued in the sannyasa order while being an ISKCON guru. In 2003, due to his deteriorating health, he moved to California, and after almost three years, he shifted to New Mexico, and then to Albany, New York.

According to a letter from one of his devotees, while Goswami was in Ireland, his godsister named Pranada dasi Mataji used to visit him often. • Bharat Jago Padyatra (Wake Up India Foot March) – This foot march successfully navigated mountainous terrain, passing through 500 villages. During this journey, Maharaj Ji spoke with more than 300,000 individuals, participated in conversations and attentively listened to their concerns. They also provided help, such as medicines and blankets, to the underprivileged and those in need. They also started a campaign to restore the polluted Ganges River during this march.
• Jan Jagran Padyatra (Awaken The People Foot March) – The objective behind this foot march was to inspire the younger generation to help in the development of the mountainous region. It also aimed to urge the government to acknowledge and solve the problems faced by people in these hilly areas. Additionally, the initiative played an important role in helping to include the Nepali language as an official language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India.
• Janata Jage Padyatra (People Awake Foot March) – The foot march occurred in Bihar, a state facing issues with poverty and violence. Its purpose was to remind people about the important principles of peace and unity as in the teachings of Buddha and Mahavir Swami. The main objective of this padayatra was to help the masses, particularly the youth, understand the importance of maintaining law and order for economic and social development.
• Gandhi Yatra (A Car Rally Dedicated to Non-Violence) – In order to bring back interest in the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and promote harmony among various religious communities, Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj led the Gandhi-Yatra. This initiative transitioned into a car rally, with the participation of 350 cars. They began the journey from the place where Saint Kabir was buried. There is a temple and a mosque together at the burial site symbolizing unity.
• Shrandhanjali Padyatra (Tribute Foot March) – This march was conducted to remember and honour the memory of the people who lost their lives while participating in peaceful protests for the establishment of a separate state of Uttarakhand. When Satpal Maharaj was the Minister of State for Railways in the Devegowda Government, he presented a proposal to the Prime Minister to grant statehood to Uttarakhand, which was granted and officially announced during the Independence Day celebrations on 15 August 1996. This march then became a symbol of the efforts made towards making Uttarakhand a distinct state and a way to show respect for the sacrifices made by people dedicated towards this cause.
• Sadbhawana Padyatra (Goodwill Foot March) – The main objective of this march was to bring Hindus and Muslims together peacefully after the devastating violence that occurred in Gujarat. It went on for 22 days and covered 350 kilometres. People from various religious backgrounds participated in this padyatra.

• Gandhi Rainbow Peace March – The march began where Mahatma Gandhi was forced to step off a train as the carriage was only meant for the white people. It ended at Durban’s City Hall, where the Mayor welcomed the participants. During this event, Shri Maharaj Ji gave a sculpture of a young Gandhi as a lawyer to the Deputy Mayor of Pietermaritzburg. The sculpture was intended to be placed at the railway station, honouring Gandhi’s journey and his important role in history.

Political Leader

Satpal Maharaj started his political career in 1989 by joining the Indian National Congress (INC) party. The same year he contested Lok Sabha elections from Pauri Garhwal and lost against Chandra Mohan. He became a Member of the Executive Committee, P.C.C.(I), Uttar Pradesh from March 1991 to September 1994. During his time in office as a Union Minister and Minister of Railways for the State of Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand) in 1996, Satpal Maharaj inaugurated the project involving a tunnel rail initiative. This project gained approval and budget allocation from the government and was the longest tunnel rail undertaking in India. It contributed significantly towards both national security and the livelihoods of Uttarakhand’s residents. He was Union Minister of State Finance from June 1997 to March 1998. He was also made a Member of the Implementation Committee for Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of India’s Independence, where he served till 1998. Following which, he again contested for Lok Sabha elections and lost against Retired Major General Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri. In 1999, he once again lost to Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri from Pauri Garhwal. He then served as a member of AICC, Uttarakhand. In 2000, he was made the president of the Human Rights Department, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee. Satpal Maharaj also served as secretary in the All India Congress Committee from 2002-2004 and Vice-Chairman in the 20-Point Programme Implementation Department Government of Uttarakhand from February 2003 till March 2007. In 2004, he again contested for Lok Sabha elections from Pauri Garhwal and lost. In 2008, he was made the AICC Co-ordinator to Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh while also contesting in byelections from Pauri Garhwal. In 2009, He was re-elected to the 15th Lok Sabha (2nd term) from the Garhwal constituency. He defeated Retired Lieutenant General Tejpal Singh Rawat of the Congress Party. On 5 May 2010, he was appointed as a Member of the Committee on Public Accounts and a Member of the General Purposes Committee on 19 October 2010. Satpal Maharaj was also the head of the 20-member Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence. Later he became a Member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Railways. Satpal Maharaj also introduced a private member bill in the Lok Sabha for adding Garhwali and Kumauni languages in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution in 2011. He ended his journey with the Congress Party on 21 March 2014 and joined the BJP while also resigning from the 15th Lok Sabha on 05 April 2014. Gendun Drub (1391-1474) was the first Dalai Lama of Tibet. ^[1]Dalai lama He was a disciple of Tsongkhapa Lobzang Drakpa (1357–1419), the great founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Gendun Drub was the first Abbot of Ganden Monastery, the founder of Tashilhunpo Monastery and established three religious colleges in Shigatse, Tsang. ^[2]The Treasure of Lives He was a well-known scholar-saint, known for combining study and practice. He recorded his insights on the Buddha’s teachings and philosophies in 8 voluminous books. Some of his well-known works are ‘Sunlight on the Path to Freedom’, ‘Praise of the Venerable Lady Khadiravani Tara’, ‘Crushing the Forces of Evil to Dust’, ‘The Song of the Eastern Snow Mountains’ and his three extensive commentaries on the Vinaya. He passed away in 1474 while meditating at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery at the age of 84. Wiki/Biography

Gendun Drub was born in 1391 in Gyurmey Rupa near Sakya in the Tsang region of central Tibet. From a very young age, Gendun Drub showed a deep interest in religious symbols and practices. He was an avid learner and used to carve sacred Tibetan syllables and prayers into stones. After his father’s death, his mother sent him to Nartang Monastery to study where he was given the name of Pema Dorje. ^[4]The Treasury of Lives At the age of 15, he received the name of Gendun Drubpa Pel (dge ‘dun grub pa dpal), and after five years was ordained as a full monk in 1411. Due to his exemplary accomplishments in Vinaya studies, he earned the title of “omniscient” (thams cad mkhyen pa). In 1415 at the age of twenty-five, at Ganden Monastery, Ü-Tsang, he met the great Tsongkhapa Lobzang Drakpa (tsong kha pa blo bzang grags pa, 1357-1419) where he became his student and learned a great deal of religious teachings culminating into his legacy. ^[5]The Treasury of Lives

Gendun Drub met his fellow student and heir to Tsonkhapa’s tantric teachings, Sherab Sengge (1383-1445) at Sangpu Monastery. They studied and travelled together for twelve years spreading Tsongkhapa’s Lamrim teachings in monasteries including Sakya and Kadam monasteries in Tsang. ^[6]Tsemrinpoche In his life span as a spiritual teacher, Gendun Drub trained abbots of the Hadam, Geluk, and Sakya Monasteries across Tibet and Kham.

Family

The first Dalai Lama had a humble beginning. He was born in a nomadic tribe belonging to the Drom (‘brom) clan. He was raised as a shepherd for 7 years before being sent to Nartang Monastery by his mother. ^[7]Tsemrinpoche

Parents 

His father’s name was Gonpo Dorje (mgon po rdo rje) and his mother’s name was Jomo Namkyi (jo mo nam mkha’ skyid). His father died in 1398 when he was 7 years old. Mahākāla

As per a legend, he experienced divine intervention on the night he was born. It is said that after his camp was attacked by bandits, his mother hid him among rocks for the night. Upon returning the next day, she found him safe and unharmed guarded by a large black raven. It is believed that it was the Tibetan Buddhist guardian deity, Mahākāla protecting him in the form of the raven. ^[9]The Treasury of Lives Later, Gendub Drub became devoted to Mahākāla.

Palden Lhamo

Palden Lhamo, the protector deity of all incarnations of Dalai Lama. She is the only female Dharampala among the 8 Dharampalas

According to another tradition, Palden Lhamo, the female Dharma protectress of the Gelug tradition, and the guardian spirit of the scared lake of Lhamo Lhatso (lha mo lha mtsho) came into Gendun Drun’s vision and promised that she would protect the reincarnation lineage of the Dalai Lamas. ^[10]Tsemrinpoche To present, she remains the personal Dharampala (Dharma protector) of all the reincarnations of the Dalai Lama. Ordination

Upon entering the Nartang monastery, he took upāsaka lay vows from the fourteenth abbot,  Khenchen Drubpa Sherab (1357-1423) and in 1405, at the age of 15 he took his novice vows where he received the name Gendun Drubpa Pel (dge ‘dun grub pa dpal). Career

In 1432, Gendun Drub became the Abbot of the Sakya monastery Tanak Riku and converted it into a Geluk monastery. ^[14]The Treasury of Lives After the death of Tsongkhapa’s successor, Khedrup Je (the 1st Panchen Lama, 1385–1438), Gendun Drup assumed the leadership of the Gelugpa. He later became the Abbot of Drepung Monastery, Lhasa. ^[15]The Titi Tudorancea Bulletin He entered a meditation retreat at Narthang in 1441 at the age of 50. ^[16]The Titi Tudorancea Bulletin He held great prayer festivals twice at Tashi Lhunpo, one in 1463 and the next one in 1474, which was attended by around 1600 monks and 10000 laypeople. ^[17]The Treasury of Lives Gendun Drub founded Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in 1477 in Shigatse, Tsang, despite strong opposition from the dominating Sakya and Kagyu monasteries. Its establishment increased the influence of Gelugpa in Tsang. He also established three religious colleges in Shigatse. Tashi Lhunpo Monastery became the fourth great Gelugpa monastery in Tibet after Ganden, Drepung and Sera Monasteries. Gendun Drub had no political role. The political intervention of Dalai Lamas began much after his time after the enthronement of the 5th Dalai Lama.

Death

In 1474, at the age of 84, Gendun Drub passed away while meditating at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. Before his death, he went on foot to visit Narthang Monastery for his final teaching tour. ^[19]The Titi Tudorancea Bulletin

Facts/Trivia

• He was known as the “Perfecter of the Monkhood” and often called Panchen Gendun Drup, ‘Panchen’ being the title meaning ‘great scholar.’

• He was identified as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the compassionate bodhisattva.
