Controversies

  • Badshah attracted controversy for his war of words with Yo Yo Honey Singh. It all happened when Singh made his comeback in the industry with the film ‘Zorawar.’ While he was on a promotional tour for his film, a reporter asked Honey Singh his take on Badshah taking over his place in the Bollywood, to which Honey replied- “Rolls Royce chalayiĀ hai aapne kabhi, Rolls Royce or Nano mein bhot farak hota hai.” Badshah, too responded to the singer’s comments saying that one can find Nano more on roads than Rolls Royce and that whatever is great in public’s eyes is sold more. The cold war took an ugly turn when the two apparently got into a fight at a party thrown by one of their close friends. It all started from a heated argument and resulted in the singers manhandling each other.
  • In August 2020, the Mumbai Police revealed that the rapper paid Rs. 72 lakh to attract more views on one of his music videos on YouTube as he wanted to set a world record for most YouTube views in the first 24 hours. The music video, “Pagal Hai” was claimed by the rapper to have been watched 75 million times on the first day of its release, and according to Badshah, this video had broken the previous records set by Taylor Swift and the Korean boy band BTS; however, Google rejected his claim. According to deputy commissioner of police Nandkumar Thakur:

The singer confessed that he wanted to set a world record for most number of viewers in 24 hours on YouTube. That is why he paid Rs 72 lakh to this company.ā€

Later, Badshah denied the allegations and said,

Following the summons, I have spoken to the Mumbai Police. I have aided the officials in their investigation by cooperating and carrying out the due diligence on my part. Iā€™ve categorically denied all the allegations levelled against me and made it clear that I was never involved in such practices, nor do I condone them. The investigation procedure is being executed in accordance with the law and I have complete faith in the authorities, who are handling this matter. Iā€™d like to thank all those who have conveyed their concern to me. It means a lot to me.ā€ [2]Hindustan Times

  • In 2023, an FIR was filed against Badshah, along with 40 others, by the Viacom18 media company. According to the complaint, Badshah had promoted an app called Fairplay to watch the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. As per reports, Viacom18 had the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to stream the matches, but the matches were illegally streamed on Fairplay. On 30 October 2023, Badshah was interrogated by the Maharashtra Police Cyber Cell for around three to four hours. Badshah’s advocate, Prashant Patil, clarified that his client was summoned by the cyber cell as a witness rather than an accused. Patil further explained that Badshah’s bank records indicated he had not committed any wrongdoing and was merely a witness in the investigation. [3]India Today
