Career

Struggles faced after choosing to play

Annu could not afford a javelin stick so she made her first stick with a long piece of bamboo. Because of inadequate facilities in the village and limited practice opportunities at school, Annu created a makeshift ground in her father’s field to practice. She would travel 13 miles daily to practise. Her sister would stay with her until late into the night to ensure her safety. Her father did not support her playing sports but her brother paid for her training. In 2012, when she received the call for the Indian camp, her father refused to send her alone to Patiala, where the camp was taking place. In an interview, her brother disclosed that his family’s financial situation was so bad that Annu had to borrow money to purchase shoes for her training. In an interview, she recalled that during her early days, the family faced financial struggles to afford tickets for her competitions. There were instances when she had to sleep on the train floor during travels or borrow money from neighbours to purchase tickets.

Training for the game

She used to play in many national tournaments and after witnessing her performance in one of the matches, Commonwealth Bronze Medallist Kashinath Naik was keen to coach her for competitions abroad; however, this needed him to persuade her father to permit her to train away from home. After his father gave his approval, Annu enrolled in Kashinath’s classes in 2013. Kashinath inspired her to dream about the Olympics. She asked her to watch motivational movies like Sultan, Dangal and Sachin: A Billion Dreams. After that, Annu received training at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, where she would lift 180 kg of weight intensely several times a day to develop a powerful body. Her javelin used to weigh about 600 grammes. Annu claimed that she increased her strength by using a heavier weapon. Later, she received training from Baljeet Singh.

Achievements

In 2014, she broke the 14-year-old national record with her throw of 58.83 metres in the National Inter-State Athletics Championship in Lucknow. After this, she qualified for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, finishing eighth. In the same year, she threw 59.53 metres in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, which gained her a bronze medal.

In 2016, she made a throw of 60.01 metres at the Open National Athletics Championship breaking her record. Unfortunately, Annu had numerous injuries in the year that followed. For the first time, an Indian woman surpassed the 60-meter mark. In March 2019, she broke her record again with a throw of 62.34 meters at the National Senior Athletics Championships in Patiala, Punjab. In the 23rd Asian Athletics Championships on 21 April 2019 in Qatar, she became the first Indian woman javelin thrower to participate in the World Athletics Championship and won the silver medal.

Career

Politics

Joshi began his career as a teacher and entered politics in 1967. Upon finishing his studies in 1968, he commenced his career as an officer at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In 1972, he embarked on his political journey by securing a seat in the Legislative Council representing the Shiv Sena. He held this position for three consecutive terms until 1989. Additionally, he assumed the role of Mayor of Mumbai from 1976 to 1977.

In 1990, he secured a seat in the Legislative Assembly as a candidate from the Shiv Sena. From 1995 to 1999, he held the position of Chief Minister of Maharashtra. His tenure marked a significant milestone as he became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Maharashtra when the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition assumed power in 1995. However, the first non-Congress government in Maharashtra was led by Sharad Pawar in 1978, a member of the Indian National Congress (Socialist) at the time. As per many party members, he became the Chief Minister on 14 March 1995 winning over his uncle and frontrunner for the CM position, Sudhir Joshi. Thackeray asserted that Manohar’s intellect and business knowledge were superior, and he enjoyed good relations with other leaders, particularly Sharad Pawar of the Congress party. While serving as Chief Minister, the Maharashtra government entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hindujas. However, upon discovering this arrangement, Bal Thackeray voiced his dissatisfaction, feeling marginalized in the decision-making process. During his tenure as Chief Minister, the Maharashtra government launched a substantial slum rehabilitation program. The objective of this initiative was to offer complimentary housing to slum dwellers residing in makeshift huts before 1995. The construction of the Bombay Pune Expressway took place during Joshi’s tenure as Chief Minister. He established the Jagatik Marathi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Additionally, he organized the Advantage Maharashtra Conference to stimulate industrial investments within the state. Furthermore, he coordinated the Agro Advantage Maharashtra program aimed at supporting farmers and organized an exhibition showcasing cutting-edge agricultural technology. He authored a book titled “Swachh Mumbai; Harit Mumbai” in Marathi, which centred on environmental issues and the Clean Mumbai Movement. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he encountered conflicts with various leaders, including Chhagan Bhujbal in 1991. Bhujbal voiced discontent when Bal Thackeray appointed Joshi as the Opposition leader, leading to Bhujbal’s leaving the party. During the 1999 General Elections, he secured a seat in the Lok Sabha representing Central Mumbai. Joshi served as the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise from October 1999 to May 2002 in the administration led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Between 2002 and 2004, he held the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. On 20 March 2006, he secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha after facing defeat in the prior Lok Sabha election in the Central Mumbai constituency. Despite his withdrawal from politics, he maintained a consistent presence, regularly attending all gatherings at the Thackerays’ residence, “Matoshree.”

Educator

He started the Kohinoor Technical/Vocational Training Institute to provide training as electricians, plumbers, TV/radio/scooter repairmen and photographers to semi-skilled youngsters. Later, he started many more branches of Kohinoor in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik. He also started a construction and capital-oriented business. He established the Kohinoor Business School and the Kohinoor-IMI School of Hospitality Management in Khandala, Maharashtra. He also assumed the Chancellorship of Dnyaneshwar Vidyapeeth.

Controversies

Alleged for provoking riots in Ayodhya

Amidst the 1992-1993 riots sparked by the Babri Masjid’s demolition in Ayodhya, both Joshi and Bal Thackeray were seen encouraging Shivsainiks to engage in violence against Muslims following the Indian government’s directive for an inquiry known as the Srikrishna Commission Report. Joshi, a member of the BJP-Shiv Sena government during that period, denounced the report as “anti-Hindu, pro-Muslim, and biased,” declaring his refusal to acknowledge the commission’s suggestions. [6]The Hindu

Biased allotment of land

During his tenure as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, he sanctioned a piece of land in Pune to a developer known to his son-in-law, Girish Vyas for a school project. In 1998, Girish constructed a residential complex named Sundew on the allotted land. However, in January 1999, Joshi resigned from his position following an investigation initiated by RTI activist Vijay Kumbhar from Pune. In March 2009, the Bombay High Court deemed the housing complex illegal. In 2011, the Supreme Court of India ruled on the matter and imposed a fine of Rs. 15,000. Despite labelling the allegations as “political vendetta,” Joshi accepted Thackeray’s request to step down from his position. Later, the building was repurposed for a school. [7]NDTV

In September 2022, Joshi was appointed as an important patron of NLC Bharat.

In September 2023, Sada Sarvankar, an MLA aligned with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, made a significant statement in a widely shared video. He alleged that Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut had incited him to attack Joshi’s residence at Shivaji Park in 2009. Despite the claim lacking evidence, tensions between Joshi and Uddhav Thackeray were observed by party members, especially after the passing of Bal Thackeray in 2012.

In 2013, tensions between Uddhav Thackeray and Manohar reached a peak. During the Shiv Sena’s annual Dussehra rally, Joshi, who was traditionally seated beside Bal Thackeray at all events, was forced to leave the stage. It was reported that supporters of Uddhav within the party were unhappy with Joshi’s remarks. Joshi had commented that the leadership approach of the Shiv Sena under Uddhav Thackeray was not as assertive as it had been under Bal Thackeray.

In a statement, Gajanan Kirtikar, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MP talked about Joshi and said,

Sir was known for discipline. I have worked with him in the party as well as in the state government. He was very punctual. He had a vision of development. He was a chief minister who worked at the ground level. His contribution to building Maharashtra as well the education field will never be forgotten.”

He had a deep affection for Maharashtra and the Marathi-speaking people.

He completed his doctoral thesis on the Shiv Sena, earning a PhD degree.

Religion

He follows Hinduism.

Career

Politics

In 2004, he became the district youth president for Congress. He did not run the election because he left the party after some time. According to a leader from the Maratha group Sambhaji Brigade, Patil was unhappy with how the Congress party handled protests about a controversial book from 2003 named “Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India” by James Laine. The book incited disagreement among Marathas by posing questions regarding Shivaji’s parents. As a result, significant records at the Bhandarkar Oriental Study Institute that were helpful to the book’s study were destroyed. This incident resulted in numerous arrests. In an interview, his associate said,

He got very disturbed and did not approve of the stand that the government took at that time and hence he decided to leave politics and instead dedicated himself to social work.”

Activist

To plan demonstrations in support of the Maratha reservation, he founded the Shivba Sanghatana group. In 2009, he joined the movement to secure reservations for the Maratha minority in employment and education. He gained support from six of his close aides in Jalna district including Pandurang Tarakh, the village sarpanch, Ramesh Tarakh, a doctor from Antarwali Sarati, Pradeep Solunke, a teacher from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly called Aurangabad), and three farmers, Shreeram Kurankar, Sanjay Katare and Dhananjay Duphake who are his oldest associates. They play an important part in the rallies taken out by Patil. They helped him draw a rough plan for his travels, where he should deliver speeches and make arrangements for accommodation and food. In 2013, he started his first protest—a 13-day hunger strike in Shahgad to advocate Maratha reservation. He then embarked on a second hunger strike in front of the Jalna police chief’s office, lasting eight or nine days.

Marathas protested in 2016 after a Maratha girl in Kopardi was raped and killed by a gang. Patil also played a prominent role in these demonstrations. Patil organised Marathas from the Marathwada area and brought them to the state’s capital for the Maratha Kranti Morcha protests in Mumbai in 2016–17. Patil took out rallies across the country in 2021 following the Supreme Court’s decision to abolish the Maratha reservation. This included a three-month demonstration in the Jalna district’s Sasht-Pimpalgaon, where a huge crowd came out to support him. In August 2023, the Maratha protesters came to the notice of people during a hunger strike. Chief Minister Shinde persuaded him to end the demonstration by pledging to form a committee to investigate the possibility of awarding Maratha certificates belonging to the Kunbi caste. Police attempted to forcibly remove him from the protest on the fourth day. This resulted in a fight between Patil’s followers and the police. He took out another demonstration in September 2023 which he ended after 16 days by drinking fruit juice from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

He was asked by a group of top ministers and retired judges from the government to wait until 24 December 2023. He accepted their offer but also warned them saying if they did not meet the demand by the decided date, he would take out a strike again. On 26 December 2023, he announced his rally to Mumbai and a hunger strike until death at Azad Maidan. Patil spoke at the protest and declared he would begin an indefinite hunger strike at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan on 20 January 2024. In a statement, he said,

It is difficult to suppress the Marathas. We will not return without getting reservation for the community. I will leave my village in Antarwali in Jalna district on foot and reach Mumbai and I will be joined by members from our community.”

On 27 January 2024, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in a proposal said that he would provide Kunbi certificates to 57 lakh Marathas with Kunbi backgrounds. He also said that the certificates would be provided to the family members of Marathas with Kunbi backgrounds by showing the affidavits from relatives with Kunbi records. On 27 January 2024, when called off his march to Mumbai, he stated that the case would be looked after by the judges. He and his group later stated that they wanted some changes in the proposal. They also claimed that if their petitions were denied, they would stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi from addressing campaign rallies in the state for the upcoming national elections. He started another hunger strike on 10 February 2024. His condition deteriorated on the sixth day of the strike, and he was given medication via an IV. In an interview, he talked about the hunger strike and said,

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and DCM Ajit Pawar asked for a month-long period to complete the report on Maratha reservation, therefore, I decided I will call off the strike for a month. I have made it clear to the state government that whether its report is positive or negative, it will have to start issuing Kunbi caste certificates to the Maratha community. If the state government fails to give the reservations to the Maratha community, then after a month, I will again resume this hunger strike,” Patil said at a gathering, warning the government that if they went against their word, he would “not allow any ministers of the incumbent government to roam freely in the state.”

Career

Coaching and Training

At the age of 13, in 2015, he discovered archery during a summer camp. Noticing his interest in archery, his parents signed him up at an archery academy in Trimurti Nagar, Nagpur. He trained with Satyajeet Yelne, initially using an Indian bow before moving on to a recurve bow. He later switched academies because the one in Trimurti Nagar didn’t have a target buttress. He joined the A-ZEE Sports Academy, where he trained for 5 to 6 years with NIS Coach Mohammad Zeeshan Rafique. There, he learned about compound archery, started practising it, and became the first player to win a national-level medal in Uttarakhand. Later on, the A-ZEE sports shop paid for Ojas’s equipment because his parents couldn’t afford it then. His parents thought Rs. 90,000 was too much money and wanted to invest it in a business instead. However, his uncle supported him and said not to worry. In an interview, he said,

My uncle gave me Rs 90,000. It was a turning point in my nascent sporting career. Many talented players quit sports as they don’t get timely support. I must consider myself lucky.”

He lived at his coach’s house for over a year, where his coach trained him without charging any fees. He was well-regarded in the academy, so everyone was always willing to help him out. He trained with Coach Mohammad Zeeshan at the A-ZEE Sports Academy. In July 2022, he switched academies and moved to Satara. He started training at Drushti Archery Academy with Coach Pravin Sawant.

Struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic

During the first lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic, when travelling was restricted, he stayed at his school, Siddhivinayak School. There, he practised on a target buttress that his father had set up for him at the school. He began his training at 5 a.m. with yoga and meditation and ate food brought to him from his home by a school worker named Chaya Rakshak. During the second lockdown in 2021, Ojas rented a room close to the Tajbagh Academy. He later moved to his school and stayed there by himself.

Road to Becoming a World Champion

In 2022, during the Indian Archery Junior team selection in Sonipat, he scored 1,423 and 1,427 out of a total of 1,440 points. He also surpassed the Junior World Record of 1,419 points, which was set by Mike Schloesser in 2014. In December 2022, he took part in the Sharjah 2022 Asia Cup, Leg 3, marking his first appearance for the senior India team. He secured a silver medal individually and a gold medal with his team in the men’s compound event. Before his first game as a senior, he had an accident in Pune where he broke his leg. Despite the broken leg, he managed to pass the fitness test. On 5 August 2023, he made history by becoming the first Indian male archer to win a gold medal in the men’s compound category at the World Archery Championships in Berlin. During the competition, he defeated Poland’s Przemyslaw Konecki with a score of 148-144 in the quarterfinals and overcame the previous world champion, Dutch archer Mike Schloesser, in the semifinals. In the final round, Deotale scored a perfect 150, winning over Poland’s Lukasz Przybylski by 150-149. In 2023, he was ranked at number 9 in the world.
