The Leo singer was born on 31 July 1991 (aged 32; as of 2023) in Sendhwa, Madhya Pradesh, India. From his paternal grandfather, he inherited an interest in Hindustani classical music; and gave his first stage performance at the age of 5.

In his school days, he used to listen to a lot of music and when heard the song “Mitwa” from the film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), he was so much influenced that he sang it on all occasions, and all competitions.

Though he was supposed to be an engineer, his passion for music took him to A. R. Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory in Chennai; which he considers the best decision of his life.

After working as a qawwali singer for a while, his fortunes changed when A. R. Rahman discovered a great potential in him. In his debut year, he made an impact; with songs like “Moongil Thottam” for the Tamil film Kadal (2013) and “E Sanje Eke Jaruthide” for the Kannada film RangiTaranga (2015). He got recognition in the Bollywood after he sang the song “Mere Naam Tu” for the film Zero (2018). The movie starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma; opened the doors of Bollywood for him.

Career

Ever since his childhood, Abhay had an undying devotion to music. However, he never let it hamper his studies. He did his schooling from Sendhwa, Madhya Pradesh. He went to Chennai to pursue his B.Tech in Biotechnology from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur. During the second year of his college, he realized that he was not made for such kind of profession. He, then, started attending part-time music classes at A. R. Rahman’s ‘KM Music Conservatory in Chennai; as a part-timer. At the academy, he was part of a qawwali group that used to perform at private events. At that time, A. R. Rahman was hunting for a new voice for a song in the Telugu film Kadal (2013). When Rahman saw him singing a qawwali, he asked him for a voice test. In just a matter of few days, Rahman gave him a huge break with the duet song “Moongil Thottam,” alongside Harini. The song went on to become a huge hit and opened up other opportunities for him.

  • In 2013, he won the BIG Melody Award for Best Playback Singer – Male for the film Kadal (2013).
